READ THIS! These records are NOT sold for perfect sound quality. They’re sold for their scarcity and VISUAL grading. They’ve been in storage for a decade, and they WILL play with surface noise that can be addressed with D4 or a VPI cleaning. I can’t test-play at the minute. Please don’t bid if this is a problem for you.
Beatles LP Something New 1975 UNDOCUMENTED Alternate Glow Ring LA, High Sound, NM!
Discovering a new variation is both very exciting and a pain in the butt for me. As a documentarian of U.S. label variations, it’s like an archeologist finding an unseen fossil. But the pain is that now, I’m on a quest to find other titles that may exist. This is the first one I’ve ever seen. Read on.
Until now, 100% of the Glow Ring titles I’ve found with exceptional sound quality have had thin rings surrounding the playholes of LA copies only.
Until now, the only copies I’ve seen that have indented rings around the outer edge of the labels have been issued from the Jacksonville plant, and they had the same sound quality as the other plants had.
I just found this copy of “Something New” that has Jacksonville’s outer-edge indentation on an LA pressing with LA labels, that not only glow like the thin playhole Glow Ring, but also has the same jump in sound quality that those records have.
I took this copy, along with a Jacksonville Apple copy with the Capitol logo on Side 2 to my local used record store’s listening booth, and compared the song, “Tell Me Why.” The record store also had a purple Capitol copy from 1977, and the 1983 black Capitol pressing, so I compared them all to this one.
Of the three other pressings, the black Capitol reissue came closest, with strong high ends that didn’t distort. In addition to this copy having that feature, it also has an extra punchiness that I’ve only heard on Glow Ring pressings.
The standout for me is that at the very end of “Tell Me Why,” you can hear George at the very last second, quickly swoop his fingers up the guitar neck at the last second. On regular pressings, it’s there, but if you don’t know that, you could miss it. On this pressing, it’s quiet, but it’s so clear that you can hear George’s amp coils rattle. That’s the level of detail in these Glow Rings.
Vinyl--- NM/NM. This copy looks and sounds unplayed. If it is unplayed, I’ve only played the one song a few times.
Plates--- H13/H13. Machine-stamped asterisk in the dead wax makes this copy pressed in Los Angeles.
Cover--- NM. Cover is still loosely in the shrink. A few long splits in the shrink have still covered and protected the album cover nicely. Cover looks 100% brand new. NO YELLOWING, NO SPLIT SEAMS.
Breathe Holes--- There is one breathe hole on the front cover. It’s located under the words, “Capitol Full Dimensional” at the top, to the left of the STEREO arrows.
Labels--- NM/NM. There are maybe one or two gloss bubbles that have popped. But there are NO SPINDLE MARKS at all between both sides.
Inner Sleeve--- VG+. Slight yellowing. Also, there is an area that extends to both sides that have creases from improper insertion at the factory. NO SPLIT SEAMS.
A generic inner sleeve will be provided, so as not to damage your original inner sleeve en route.
RIAA: 18
NOTE: If you’d like to aid me in my research, please write to me if you have other titles that have the Glow Ring pictured here on LA Apple copies only! In 51 years of collecting, this is the very first one I’ve ever seen, and in my experience, it means that there are usually other titles in existence from their catalogue. You’ll receive full credit by name in future editions of my books on flash drive if you provide close-up, clear photos of both labels showing the Glow Rings.
Many thanks!
As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks!)
Note: All LP’s ship outside of their album covers in order not to damage the covers during shipment.
CAUTION! There has been a startling increase in bidders canceling their bids. A word to the wise, I have started blocking any and all bidders who retract their bids regardless of the reason.
Please don’t bid unless you’re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks!
(Please note: Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized. The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can’t get it to fully return to its cradle. Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix? Thanks!)
