Nice vintage mid-to-late 60s UK pressing of Please Please Me on the black and yellow Parlophone label.
According to Bruce Spizer’s book “Beatles for Sale on Parlophone Records”, this variation was issued sometime between the fall of 1965 and the end of 1969.
LABEL VARIATION:
From the Spizer book, the label variation is PAR 3042.SR7A(i) (description on p. 138, pictures on p. 144):
- Perimeter print reads “THE GRAMOPHONE CO...”
- Has the “SOLD IN U.K...” text.
- Has the “℗ 1963” copyright; on this variation, there’s a wide gap (e.g., line spacing) between “℗ 1963” and the “1” or “2”(side number) that appears just below it.
- In the song title area at the bottom, the “7” before “Please Please Me” is aligned between the words ”ASK” and “ME” on the line above(the “Ask Me Why” song title).
COVER VARIATION:
The cover variation is PAR 3042.SC4A, as identified by the small print used on “stereo” on the upper right corner. According to p. 137 of the Spizer book, this change was made sometime around the fall of 1965 and remained through the end of the 60s (at which point the word “stereo” was removed altogether).
CONDITION:
VINYL: A nice VG+. It retains most of its shine. There are light scratches and handling scuffs that are visible under direct light, but nothing deep. It was definitely played by its original owner, but not at all abused.
COVER: Overall VG+. There are no seam splits. It has the typical 60s UK flimsy posterboard construction, laminated on the front. The upside of the lamination is that it’s protected the cover from wear and it gives it a nice glossy shine - it looks really nice when viewing it “straight on” (photos #1, 5 & 10).
The downside of the lamination is that it makes any creases in the cover more obvious, depending on the viewing angle. Note the crease on the upper left cover (photo #7), where the lamination has separated. There’s also a crease on the bottom left corner (photo #8). And on the right (directly below Lennon), there are three small “half-circle” areas where it looks like the lamination has bubbled(photo #9).
The back cover (photos #2 & 6) has minimal yellowing and no wear, although there are a few small stains.
Not a perfect copy, but overall still a nice vintage 1960s UK pressing.
