Beatles ‘Please Please Me’ – Black & gold first pressing Very Rare
Key indicators of a first pressing:
Vinyl inner rim Matrix:
Side 1: XEX 421-1N
Side 2: XEX 422-1N.
Mother Stampers: These are tiny stamp marks located on the run off grooves:
Side One: 1 located at 10 o'clock / L located at 4 o'clock
Side Two: 1 located at 9 o'clock / 0 located at 2 o'clock
Vinyl track listing Labels: First Pressing: unique features:
· The vinyl album has the black label with gold print
· “Parlophone Co. Ltd” printed as the heading to each side
· “Dick James Mus. Co”: The tracks; “I Saw Her Standing There”, “Misery”, “Do You Want To Know A Secret” & “There’s A Place” incorrectly credited Dick James Music on the first pressing
· The record speed of 33 1/3 is printed on the label.
Outer Cover: First Pressing: unique features:
· The first pressing has the words, ‘printed and Made by Ernest J.Day & Co. Ltd. London’ found at the bottom right on the back of the sleeve.
· The front laminated cover has a large “mono“ label at the top, right.
· The photo credit for the front cover states; ‘Photo Angus McBean’ printed in the lower right corner &
· The Letter A in ‘Angus McBean’ starts in line with the end of the letter “s” in the word ‘songs’ (in large blue font) above it.
· Polythene-lined “Use Emitex” die-cut inner sleeve.
Visual Grade: Very Good Plus
The vinyl is a rich clean gloss.
There are a few surface marks and wisps and light scratch on side 1, but none affect the sound quality.
The spindle shows very light evidence of being played.
A very good example in such condition.
Audio Grade: Very Good Plus
I have played both sides on my Hi Fi (Technics Direct drive turntable with Bower and Wilkinson cross wired speakers and a Denon PMA 1600 amplifier)
At 30 Decibels there is a background crackle audible at the start of both sides and a faint crackle audible between tracks, however, each track sounds clear, engaging and alive.
There is a good bass frequency found on the first pressings with no ticks, jumps or crackles during each track.
It is enjoyable to listen to which is what you want after all.
You will find other examples at much higher prices which is no, guarantee of anything more than this sale offers.
Outer Cover: Very Good
· The laminate front retains its original glossy sheen with no sign of ring wear.
· The matte cardboard back cover has some discolouration.
· There are no pen marks, writing, stains, rips, Sellotape or splits
· The spine shows light wear and the ‘Me’ in ‘Please, Please Me’ has worn off, hence graded very good and not very good plus.
· The ‘Emitex’ original inner sleeve is clean and very good plus
