Here’s a rarity I pulled when going through my “odd” Beatles releases box. A 1968 Apple Records - Pocket Disc pressing of
Hey Jude
b/w
Revolution
It features the only officially released 3:38 edit of Hey Jude as compared to the 7:11 length found on all other single releases of the Beatle classic.
Measuring 4”, this Flexi record was sold exclusively from vending machines along with other Pocket Disc from the Americom Corp. library.
Both sides play very good for a record that was pressed without audiophiles in mind. I just play tested it and although not a sonic mind blower the sound is fine with minimal noise. If you’re even a little bit familiar with the sound of flexi records from Americom, you know where I’m coming from. No crackle or skips just that familiar flexi “sound”.
It wasn’t originally issued with a picture sleeve but rather a generic Pocket Disc cardboard sleeve in either blue or red. Unfortunately I don’t have a sleeve but they are generally available on eBay and since the same sleeves were used for all the different releases, picking one up isn’t impossible.
These disc were a rarity in 1968 and have only become more and more scarce over the years. In the days before internet dominance, finding a copy was nearly impossible. This little 4” treasure is a tough one to find at a fair price so I’ve tried to take condition and appearance into consideration. It’s not mint but is still very solid and “collectible” (I hate that term but I guess in this case I’ll us it).
A true Beatles “vinyl” rarity.
