Some feel Abbey Road is the best album, some say Revolver or the White Album but Rolling Stone has mentioned Pepper as the classic quintessential psychedelic synopsis and musical depiction of the Summer of Love in 1967- a time that saw the death of Argentine / Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara in Bolivia, Gabriel Garcia Marquez release CIEN ANOS DE SOLEDAD (100 Years of Solitude), Sidney Poitier coming out with 3 cinematic and sociological race relation narrative gems- IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, TO SIR WITH LOVE and the unforgettable GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER with Tracy and Hepburn, Monterrey Pop Festival with a certain guitarist by the name of Jimi Hendrix and the Mamas and Papas and Vietnam / Indochina War.  
With all due respect to the eternal and ageless Rolling Stones (with Mick Jagger ready to prove he can get an Olympic medal in fitness) or Led Zeppelin or the intellectual and tastefully avant garde Pink Floyd, the Beatles were the greatest rock and roll band that every graced the face of the Earth. Sgt Pepper is considered by many to be the Beatle opus magnum when the Beatles decided they basically had it with live performances where audiences could not hear their musical output. This album is also considered the prime example of the marriage between popular music that was meant to dance to and the classical music genre that producer Sir George Martin was so familiar with.  Like John Lennon stated in an interview, the group and music producer were doing a lot of learning together. Pepper actually started with STRAWBERRY FIELDS (the only single not to reach #1 in the singles charts) and that production was a sign of things to come . Collaboration was in full force between the group and the genius producer. The Fab Four were able to metamorphosize tragedies (childhood sickness, very early deaths of mothers and fathers and their own conflicted manager Brian Epstein) to some of the most beautiful melodies and mystical lyrics ever written.  In a time with Tin Pan Alley provided songs, Sir George Martin knew when to have faith in their songwriting abilities that evolved more and more each time. Although John Lennon and Paul McCartney overshadowed George Harrison, he eventually penned one of the most monumental love ballads ever from the album ABBEY ROAD. "Something" was according to Frank Sinatra the greatest love song of the century. John contributed a strong of #1 hits including HELP, I FEEL FINE and SHE LOVES YOU (mostly a collaboration) while Paul revolutionized the frontiers of popular song with the then unheard of anything but rock backing of a classical string quartet with YESTERDAY and the Hitchcock punctuating Pscyho like theme that catapulted Eleanor Rigby's spirit into the vinyl grooves of Revolver. They wrote in every practical gnere: children's for ALL TOGETHER NOW and YELLOW SUBMARINE, heavy metal with HELTER SKELTER from the priceless White Album, Indian with WITHIN YOU WITHOUT YOU and an indirect Eastern visit in Rubber Soul's NORWEGIAN WOOD, the quintessential yoga music in ACROSS THE UNIVERSE and the literary genius of Lennon's I AM THE WALRUS that many feel was his greatest creative undertaking with IMAGINE from 1971.  I am not even going to get into the Tibetan lesson provided by TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS or the synthesis of pop and classical (extolled by Leonard Bernstein) in Sgt Pepper's A DAY IN THE LIFE. Come Together, Mr Mustard, and the only Beatle single not to reach #1 that was perhaps the greatest according to genuis George Martin (an honest man who never took them for a proverbial ride) STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER.
