READ THIS! These records are NOT sold for perfect sound quality. They’re sold for their scarcity and VISUAL grading. They’ve been in storage for a decade, and they WILL play with surface noise that can be addressed with D4 or a VPI cleaning. I can’t test-play at the minute. Please don’t bid if this is a problem for you.
Beatles’ Story SCARCE 1976 Orange Capitol Pinckneyville Consignment Label, EX!
Most collectors have no idea of the existence of this consignment copy of The Beatles’ Story. Not to be confused with Capitol’s scarce Jacksonville in-house orange labels. Pinckneyville consignment pressings are of course, the reincarnations of Decca consignment pressings from the 70’s. Pinckneyville pressed the Decca consignment LP’s for Capitol out of their Illinois plant until they were bought out by MCA in 1970. MCA used to own the UNI label.
That said, if you compare the features of UNI labels with these Capitol labels, you will see the similarities:
1. Higher gloss
2. Short block text which is bold, as compared to Capitol’s thin text
3. Concentric ring much closer in to the playhole belongs to Decca, MCA and UNI lathes.
If you have any of Elton John’s earlier albums, or Neil Diamond’s, Strawberry Alarm Clock or Pinkiny Canady albums, you can see all of these features.
They are also on this copy.
Vinyl--- Configured Sides 1 and 4, 2 and 3:
EX/VG+. EX/VG+. A few light lines only on sides 3 and 4.
Plates--- J9/J11. J10/J11. No Capitol plant insignias present, because these LP’s weren’t pressed by Capitol. However, the name, “Jay” is in cursive on all four sides, as well as the machine-stamped, “Mastered by Capitol.”
Cover--- VG. General wear only. Top and bottom seams show moderate shelfwear, but NO SPLIT SEAMS. Spine is also missing some slick, but has NO SPLITS. Front cover has moderate ringwear, back cover has light dirtwear.
Labels--- EX/EX. EX/EX. Extremely minimal light spindle marks, and just a few of them.
**Not to be confused with Jacksonville’s in-house labels, Pinckneyville labels have the following differences:
1. Concentric ring placement close to the playhole
2. The text on the Pinckneyville labels are spaced closer together, as well as in bolder font than on the Jacksonville labels.
3. “P” in a circle, followed by “Capitol Records, Inc.” is located to the left of the playhole on the Pinckneyville copy, and at the bottom below the running times on the Jacksonville copy.
4. Higher gloss with circular groove patterns, which are spindle mark resistant.
See compere labels.
Capitol Inner Sleeves--- VG+/VG. Generic white inner sleeves with die-cut holes for the labels to show is present. Both sleeves have yellowed, and one sleeve has seam splits.
Generic inner sleeves will be provided, so as not to damage your original Capitol inner sleeves en route.
RIAA: 16. Surprise, surprise! It’s in the bottom right corner of the inside of the gatefold.
If you’ve never seen this variation before, you should take it as an indication that you won’t see it again. These are too hard to find.
Check your Beatles collector’s collection! If they don’t have this one, it will make an excellent Christmas gift this year.
As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks!)
Note: All LP’s ship outside of their album covers in order not to damage the covers during shipment.
CAUTION! There has been a startling increase in bidders canceling their bids. A word to the wise, I have started blocking any and all bidders who retract their bids regardless of the reason.
Please don’t bid unless you’re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks!
(Please note: Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized. The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can’t get it to fully return to its cradle. Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix? Thanks!)
