Extremely rare 1978 experimental pressing of The Beatles (White Album) Capitol Records SEBX-11841 on white vinyl with VARIED-COLOR splash. This is only the fourth copy that I have seen of one of these rarities in more than 20 years. They are MUCH RARER than even a "Yesterday and Today" Butcher Cover. Regular white vinyl copies have sold for more than the opening bid for this copy!
Perry Cox, one of the world's leading Beatles experts, states in his book "Official Price Guide to the Beatles Records and Memorabilia" that gray splash LPs were pressed experimentally in very limited quantities in 1978 and that only disc 1 was produced. There was also a second experimental pressing on clear vinyl on disc 2. The pressing offered in this auction MUST THEN REPRESENT A THIRD EXPERIMENTAL PRESSING as both discs have the splash effect and disc 2 displays the heaviest coloration. Cox valued the gray splash White Albums at $175 for Good, $450 for Very Good, and $1,000 for Near Mint in 1999!
This copy of "The Beatles" has a splash effect on both disc 1 and 2 that radiates out from the center in two cone-shaped areas. Disc 2 shows a much stronger splash than disc 1. Of special note is the splash color on this set - disc 2 shows a more or less purple at the sides of the cone with perhaps what may be called gray inside the cone. Disc 1 shows very light orange-tint cone-shapes. I have tried to show the cone-shape colored areas in the photos.
Again, this is only the fourth copy of the experimental white vinyl splash SEBX-11841 that I have seen in almost 20 years.
CONDITION: Discs are VG++ to Near Mint. Cover is VG+ on the front and VG on back due to discoloration and ring wear.
