Description

Guaranteed authentic!  Criteria used in examining 2nd State Butcher Covers -

  • Jackets with an RIAA number higher than 6 are not Butchers.  Mine was manufactured in L.A. so is numbered 6 (photo 3).
  • Some 2nd state jackets have catalogue number on top front right hand corner either partially or fully hidden by paste over (photo 6).
  • Just to the right of the top of the trunk you can see the dark V of Ringo's shirt showing through the paste over cover (photo 5). You can see Ringo's face under very bright lighting.
  • Authentic Butcher LP covers DO NOT have the Gold Record Award seal on the front.
  • The word Yesterday on the back cover and label is in quotation marks (photo 2).
  • Rainbow colored band on label.
ORIGINAL 1966 CAPITOL T2553 MONO RELEASE WITH TRUNK COVER PASTED OVER BUTCHER COVER MAKING IT SECOND STATE.  Butcher cover was released June 15, 1966, Capitol Records recalled all of them and re-released the album with trunk paste over cover 5 days later.  The number 6 on the back cover marks the 1966 first pressing in Los Angeles.  This cover was only released in the United States and Canada.  Includes the original orange Capital records paper sleeve.  Cover is in good shape except a thin strip of the trunk cover paper layer has been pulled back in a 2 inch area at the top right corner.  Butcher cover underneath is not damaged in any way on the top right corner but there are two other 1 inch scuffed areas.  I can't tell whether the small circular scuff shown in the picture has pulled up some of the butcher cover. Label is in excellent condition.  I bought this LP when it first came out in Los Angeles.    It is very difficult parting with my Beatles collection, piece by piece but in this economy, it has become necessary.  The record is in very good condition and plays fine with no skips, very clean but does have lots of light scratches and shows quite a bit of wear.  A great collector's item.  A GREAT INVESTMENT!

Capital Records recalled this album after receiving complaints from dealers.  All copies were ordered shipped back to the record company.    The Jacksonville plant sent most of their copies to the landfill.  Then the Capitol Records decided to paste over the offending butcher cover with the trunk photo as seen above.  Covers that do not have the pasteover are called first state, those with the pasteover are second state. Third state are those covers showing butcher cover after trunk cover paste over was peeled off.   First and second state are the most valuable and increase in value every year.  In 2006 a sealed mono first state original butcher cover sold for $39,000.  (Reference Wikipedia)
