Description

This unpeeled Butcher Cover, The Beatles Yesterday and Today, is not from an estate sale, nor is it from a yard sale. This is an album I bought when I was 13 or 14 years old. At the time I belonged to a record club, can't remember if it was Columbia or Capital Record Club. Paid $2.97 since it's MONO. I think the Stereo albums were $3.97 (I could be $1 off here..on the low side..it's been a long time). This has never left my possession and has been kept in a smoke free home.

I have a good friend, Dick, who aside from being a drummer and audiophile of the highest degree, is also a Beatles afficianado. About 16 or 17 years ago, he happened across this album while looking through my collection. He nearly had a heart attack! Mostly because it was "mixed in" with my other records and "not protected". He immediately gave me the protective sleeve that it has resided in since (thank you Dick).

I'm just a regular gal, not a record seller. I have done my homework and know it's a valuable piece, but I'm not an expert at grading, nor do I know the lingo or criteria. I will be as descriptive and honest as I can be about the condition of this item. I've also taken a lot of pix. Please don't hesitate to email me if you have further questions. I'll be happy to take more specific pix and email them to you if needed. I had taken several more pictures, but was unable to post more than 12 on my listing.

I'll start inside and work my way out. As a little additional piece of Beatles history, there is a newspaper clipping from the St. Louis Post Dispatch, dated November 1966 about the Beatles. In effect the article questions whether or not they have any "staying power" or considers that they may be "washed up" (pretty funny in retrospect, huh?). Being a Beatles GA-GA teen, I, of course, cut this article out (didn't see too much in the papers in those days about teen music groups) and stuck it in the album.

The album itself was played A LOT, but, being a Libra, I tried to take good care of my possessions. I've done my best to capture it in one of the pix, there is one significant scratch (the album still plays, just with a tick) across two bands, Drive My Car and I'm Only Sleeping. Otherwise, there are no other scratches and few fingerprints. As you can see from the pix, the labels are in good shape, without a lot of spindle marks.

The inner sleeve is the original. The bottom of the sleeve is split in the middle for about 3 to 4 inches. It has not been repaired.

Now for the outer cover. When my pal Dick told me what I had, I was skeptical and had to "see" for myself, so I did, as carefully as I could, peel up all four front corners...it's definitely the butcher cover underneath. On the left front, a tiny piece (about the size of a green pea) of the butcher cover started to come up w/the paste over, so I stopped! The cover is split at the bottom middle for about 2 inches and has not been taped or otherwise repaired. The side spine is in decent condition for it's age. It's started to crack a little, but is not split.

One of the photos looks like my finger on a white background, I'm attempting to point out Ringo's v-neck right at the end of my finger.

As I mentioned, this is a Mono recording. The RIAA number is "3". There is a slight crease(?...don't know how to describe it) that runs through the upper right of the reverse side of the cover and is about 5 inches long. The cover has yellowed a little with age (gee, it's 40 this year!!!) and shows some light soiling (so hard to keep white things clean!).

Again, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me. I would highly recommend the winning bidder purchase shipping insurance on this item. I am open to other shipping methods and will ship by whatever method you are willing to pay for.

Thanks for taking the time to look and good luck bidding!

ADDITIONAL NOTE: I hadn't played this album for YEARS, although my memory told me it still played very well. After I noticed the scratch and zoomed in on it (I guess it actually looks much worse than it is, in the close-up), I decided it wouldn't hurt to play it again on both sides. I was pleasantly surprised. My stereo (phono) is from the mid '80s, but it still plays well. I didn't notice any "tick" from the scratch when I played it. All I did notice was the "crackling" sound you hear on the older, mono recordings from that time period. This background noise was most noticeable in the bands between the songs. If you listen carefully, you can pick it out during the songs, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the music (plus, I was sitting right on top of my speakers to hear it better). When I walked to a different room, I didn't notice the crackling at all.
