"Hello, Goodbye" was written by Paul. According Alistair Taylor, who worked for Brian Epstein, when Taylor asked Paul how he wrote his songs. Paul took him into his dining room to give him a demonstration on his harmonium. He asked Taylor to shout the opposite of whatever he sang as he played the instrument—black and white, yes and no, stop and go, hello and goodbye. Taylor later said, "I wonder whether Paul really made up that song as he went along, or whether it was running through his head already."

In several interviews John expressed dislike for "Hello Goodbye," calling it "three minutes of contradictions and meaningless juxtapositions" and was quoted as claiming it "smells a mile away."

"I Am the Walrus" was written by John, who claimed he wrote the first two lines on separate acid trips. The song was in the Beatles' 1967 television film and album, Magical Mystery Tour, as was “Hello Goodbye”, and was the B-side to this single, unlike their previous three "double A-side" singles, which had promoted both sides equally.

This auction is for an original Capitol Promotional 45 of “Hello Goodbye” backed with “I Am The Walrus”. The vinyl is in Very Good+ condition, glossy and without any visible scratches. The labels on both sides are Near Mint, free of ring wear or any marks. What looks like “80.00” is written in grease pencil in the run-off area on the “I Am The Walrus” side; it looks to be easily removable, although I haven’t tried. It’s really a very nice piece.
