Beatles-Related LP 1969 Modern Jazz Quartet Space Apple Record Club Issue SCARCE EX!
Beatles collectors know that there were only three Apple titles that were offered through the Capitol Record Club. Two were the Modern Jazz Quartet’s Apple titles, and the third was Mary Hopkin, Postcard.
Record Club catalogue numbers for Apple inserted the numeral “5,” as opposed to Capitol’s numeral 8.
“Space” is the hardest title to find.
The “5” catalogue number does not appear on the spine, nor the top left front corner, it only appears on the inside gatefold.
The labels also insert the numeral “5,” however, as we all know, most sellers frustratingly do not include photos of the labels. So there is hardly any way of knowing whether they are selling this very scarce variation.
There are also no horizontal black bars that can clue us in to a Record Club copy. And as collectors know, these covers were issued with inferior cardboard, which grow brittle and split faster than grandma’s remaining teeth.
*This copy is Excellent, both cover and vinyl!
Vinyl--- EX/EX. Both sides look very nearly unplayed, with the exception of some dulling of the surfaces and some very light manufacturer’s defect below the grooves. Beautiful copy.
Plates--- ST1-5-3360 1, 2/ ST1-5-3360 2, 2
Cover--- EX. Structurally very solid. Top and bottom seams have light to moderate shelfwear. Bottom left corner has a small crunch-in. (Specs in the front and back cover photos are graphics in the image, rather than flake-off.) NO SEAM SPLITS.
Gatefold--- EX. Just a shade off NM. NO CENTER SPLITS. Record Club catalogue number is located on the right top corner of the right-hand panel. See compere photo, which shows its absence on the commercially-released copies.
Labels--- NM/NM. Beautiful full-gloss labels, as opposed to the commercially-released semi-gloss labels.
Concentric groove is much closer to the playhole, very similar to Decca consignment discs. This placement is characteristic of Record Club discs. See compere photo of the labels with a commercially-released copy.
Catalogue numbers on each side have the inserted numeral “5.” See compere photo of the labels with a commercially-released copy.
Side 2 label has completely different bottom perimeter text, found only on both Apple and Capitol Record Club issues. See compere photo of the labels with a commercially-released copy.
NO SPINDLE MARKS AT ALL, EITHER SIDE.
Inner Sleeve--- EX. Generic white inner sleeve with no die-cut hole for the labels to show through. NO SEAM SPLITS. Slightly yellowed, and I mean slightly. Some vertical wrinkling from the manufacturing process.
A generic inner sleeve will be provided, so as not to damage your original Record Club inner sleeve en route.
*If you’re the winner, please make sure to properly store this LP in order to preserve the cover. Not many remain, which aren’t split!
CAUTION! There has been a startling increase in bidders canceling their bids. A word to the wise, I have started blocking any and all bidders who retract their bids regardless of the reason.
Please don’t bid unless you’re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks!
(Please note: Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized. The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can’t get it to fully return to its cradle. Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix? Thanks!)
