Sixteen tracks in the girl group style (although usually performed by solo singers, not groups), originally released on Decca in the 1960s. Alas, this acts as evidence of how generally inferior British girl group records were to ones being produced across the Atlantic, with occasional exceptions. Much of this is average pop, with decorative flourishes of '60s production the only factors that really distinguish this from pop of any era. Some sparks are kicked up by Beverly (aka Beverly Martyn), Marianne Faithfull's "The Sha La La Song" (one of her better early tracks), and Lulu's smoking cover of Goffin-King's "I Can't Hear You No More," though each of these cuts is available on better compilations. Trainspotter types might want to note the presence of Vashti's "Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind" (one of the least impressive songs that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards donated to other artists), the Orchids' "Mr. Scrooge" (an early Shel Talmy production), and the Vernons Girls' "Only You Can Do It," covered to greater effect by French singer Francoise Hardy. ~ Richie Unterberger
