Description
Up for auction is one of the rarest Rockabilly records known. Original pressing of Billy Adams first record Rock, Pretty Mama on the Quincy label, number 932, recorded when he was 15. A-side is label owner Luke Gordon doing Don't Cramp My Style. Rockin' Records prices this record at $1500-2000 based on the Billy Adams side. Popsike.com doesn't list one as having sold recently and they have been online at least 5 years and have not reported one as having sold. So that gives you an idea of the rarity. Most so-called rare records appear on their site as having sold many times in the last 5 years, to give you an example. Record plays through both sides without skipping. There is background hiss that is noticeable, your high filter will knock most of it out, but you get used to it pretty quick because the performance is so good. I have heard that they all have this hiss due to the cutting lathe used at the time. Record still has good fidelity despite the hiss. Luke Gordon side has some clicking that sounds about half way through then goes away, not too offensive. I would rate the condition at VG-- with some sheen, but like I said both sides play through OK and can be enjoyed. There is a very slight warp that does not affect play on either side, it is so slight most dealers would not mention it. Not a soup bowl, very very slight. Labels have writing on both sides, see pics, some soiling. I took several unflattering pics of the vinyl to give you an idea of the condition under strong lighting. If you haven't heard the Billy Adams song it is great primitive rockabilly, real homemade sounding, great relaxed vocal, and crude drumming. A classic. He later became a Sun recording artist, of course. A very scarce record. Careful shipping is $5.00 domestic, $12.50 foreign. I have been selling vintage records for over 30 years, long before eBay! Bid with confidence, conservative grading. I have worked for River Records, Capital City Records, Used Kids Records and the late Ken Stone. Please check my other auctions this week I will be auctioning other rare records from my collection. Thanks and good luck bidding, Jeff
