Description
A friend of mine recently found this record in a job lot collection. I’ve been collecting, buying and selling records for over 40 years and I’ve never seen a record like this even in 10 years of running Dave’s Boutique record store on Smith st in Collingwood, Melbourne for 10 years where we processed thousands of records.
I’ve seen plenty of test pressings, white labels, promos, bootlegs and 7”s with large centre holes but I’ve never seen an lp with no label section vinyl. It’s really weird because it has not been roughly cut out. It looks to have either been pressed like this or cut out with some sort of professional cutting machine. The inside edge is very smooth and even. The feel of it suggests it has been in this state for many years. Hasn’t been done recently.
The runout vinyl has stamped matrix number ‘YEEX 150 - 1’ on side one and ‘YEEX 151 - 1’ on side two. Having listened to hundreds of Beatles records over the years and looked at their matrix numbers I believe this to be a legit Beatles pressing. But given there are over 400 different listed pressings of the Hey Jude LP, who knows which one this is?
Unfortunately we have know way of asking the previous owner what they know about this record. I think it is either a bizarre pressing oddity or a radio station may have stamped out centres of their records to discourage theft by radio station staff. They then could have played them with a special adapter? Or it’s for some special turntable type?? But that’s just my speculation. I’m leaning more towards pressing oddity. There is a chance it was cut out privately but they’ve done an exceptionally good job if they have. I was able to sit this record carefully on my turn table and play it through. The needle stops at a closed loop in runout wax. Doesn’t just dump into the centre.
Unfortunately the record is not in best condition. Could only grade Good+ at best. Plays ok with surface noise. Some tracks are better than others. No bad skips, pops or clicks.
The sleeve is interesting. There are hand written details with spelling mistakes and some songs described with lyric lines instead of actual track titles. The track arrangement is same as normal Hey Jude lp pressings.
If anyone has seen any other records like this and/or know anything about them please let me know. Cheers, Dave
