Recorded during the studio sessions that yielded Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's 2005 full-length Howl, this limited-edition promotional release compiles a half-dozen previously unissued cuts wrought from the same folk and blues traditions as the LP proper. The songs are by no means leftovers, however, boasting a raw honesty and emotional depth as potent as anything in the band's catalog to date. Indeed, the harrowing, strung-out music that comprises Howl Sessions was perhaps too visceral for commercial release. Songs like the spectral "Mercy" and the gospel-inspired "Feel It Now" communicate a nakedly spiritual yearning harking back to the field hollers and dust-bowl balladry of another time. ~ Jason Ankeny
