Description
Black Sabbath 1st, Vertigo Swirl, 1Y/2Y, BLACK G/FOLD
Black Sabbath, Same.
1970 UK pressed Vertigo Records LP, VO 6. Matrix Numbers:Side One:
VO 6 1Y # 1 420 1 3
Side Two:VO 6 2Y 1 420 12 13
Vinyl:Disc sits perfectly flat and is not dished or warped. A few spider trace marks visible around the spindle areas, but not to the point of excess, and without wear to labels. Vinyl surfaces still have a good gloss, and are free of any marks save for a few of the very lightest and tiniest of sleeve removal type scuffs. Just one scuff is visible. This is approx. an inch long and running across the beginning of side one. This is surface only, however, and produces no noise at all. Playback is very clean throughout. There is no background crackle and there are no ticks, clicks or scuffs. Just the very lightest of isolated and low-volume static pops and instances of very minor and short lived static crackle were heard when I playchecked the LP, and these instances are very few and far between. I have made no attempt to clean the LP (see notes below), and this is to be expected of an LP which is forty years old. The sound quality on this very earliest pressing is superb and full-blooded.
Labels are clean and unmarked both sides.
Sleeve:Early variant thick card gatefold, matt throughout. Black inner with silver cross and text. Ozzie is mispelt as "Ossie". Text states "copyright subsists in all VERTIGO recordings". Sleeve is in very clean and bright condition. The matt inner and outer still have a good and undulled patina and are not marred by dinks or hairlines. There is one tiny white area of surface loss to the front of the sleeve from sticker removal (just above the Vertigo logo to the top right corner of front).
Else sleeve has no tears, creases, marks or inscriptions. Tips and extremities have fared very well, and without feathering. Just a touch of whitening to tips. One or two of the tiniest of chipping marks to seams, but these are very few and far between, and these areas still look very clean and bright. Spine in very clean shape. Entry side is crisp and sharp with just one or two of the lightest and tiniest of slight dings. Sleeve is not faded or sunned anywhere. The bottom inner backflap is starting to separate, but without loss or damage, and just needs regluing.
Predominantly black area of inner of gatefold is still very clean. A touch of rubbing and a few of the tiniest of white dots of scrape marks to bottom right corner. Inner looks very much better than photo suggests due to the problems inherent in trying to accurately photograph all-black surfaces.
Inner Sleeve:Original Swirl issue. This is without major creasing, unmarked and without seam splits, but slightly browned at extremities, either by age or glue darkening or a combination of both.
In Summary:A really well preserved issue. Falls short of a mint due to visible spindle hairlines and a visible but superficial mark. Still a strong EX+ however, and rare to find this very earliest pressing in anything approaching this condition.
Tracks:Black Sabbath
The Wizard
Behind The Wall Of Sleep
N.I.B.
Evil Woman, Don't Play Your Games With Me
Sleeping Village

A Note On Grading:Note that audio grading is subjective and based on sensitivity of equipment used for playback. In this instance playback has been tested on a vintage Technics Quartz Direct Drive SL1700 MKII turntable with Shure cartridge, Technics SU-C 03 amp and Technics SB-F2 Linear Phase speakers.
Also note that I generally do not clean vinyl unless so noted. Most vinyl will show improved playback quality with your preferred cleaning method, but I leave this to the prospective buyer, as controversy still surrounds the ideal method of cleaning vinyl. Instances of crackle near the beginning of sides can often be improved with cleaning, as these areas of the vinyl surfaces are the most prone to debris from handling.
