“A WARNER BROS. SOUND BUY!”, it is this slogan announced by the DJ at the leading radio stations that opened the commercial break sponsored by Warner Bros. Records in the early 70s. Perhaps, this is the only promotional copy that has survived to this day having a special baggy with the advertisement banner promoting the company. Besides the slogan, the red banner contains the Warner Bros. “shield” logo which was revived after the “Seven Arts” name was dropped at the end of 1970. Incredibly rare and unique in terms of its significance piece of Warner Bros. Records history, one of the most influential record companies of that time. Possibly, it’s this influence in particular that helped to convince Black Sabbath to change the initial title of this currently listed album, from “War Pigs” to “Paranoid”. We’re confident that Warner Bros. commercial instincts helped the album under this title to become a top 10 hit on the US album chart of 1971 and went on to sell four million copies in the US alone according to the RIAA Gold & Platinum database. The currently listed promotional release copy of Black Sabbath’s 2nd studio album belonged to one of the DJs at KHJ “Boss” radio station in Los Angeles and was pressed also in California at the Columbia Records plant in Santa Maria. Original promotional 1st print cover contains a unique combination of stickers on the front, consisting of the “Warner Bros. Records Radio Station Service Not For Resale” promotional timing strip and a “Contains the hit…IRON MAN” hype sticker which comes across extremely rarely even on the commercial copies of this album. The “Printed in U.S.A.” hype sticker contains the “WS 1887” catalog number which was assigned to the album. From the design standpoint the whole combination looks amazing – an incredibly rare promotional baggy with “A WARNER BROS. SOUND BUY!” slogan and WB “Shield” logo against the red background, a Warner Bros. promo strip containing the running time for each track and an extremely rare “IRON MAN” hit single hype sticker. Original Warner Bros. Records white labels with the “Promotional Not For Sale” banner, WB shield logo and “WS 1887” catalog number. The full matrix numbers including the very early 1st -1B / -1B matrix numbers and the “S” factory identifier of the Santa Maria pressing plant as well as the Artisan Sound Recorders mastering company’s logo are as follows: Side 1 – WS-1887-39786-A-1B: Artisan Logo 1; Side 2 – WS-1887-39787-B 1B Artisan Logo 1. This promotional copy comes with the original “Distinguished Company / 'The Warner/Reprise Loss Leaders'” black and white inner sleeve.

The cover is graded as Excellent and would be Near Mint Minus if it wasn't due to the light shelf wear at the top of the front and back cover. Aside from that, the original "Warner Bros." baggy has done a great job of preserving the cover. The gatefold interior is in Near Mint Minus condition. I grade the vinyl as strong Very Good Plus. It's in stunning condition and retains its glossy factory lacquer. The vinyl only has a few very light non-feelable surface hairlines as well as scuffs from the original inner sleeve which is in Near Mint condition. The snow-white labels are in beautiful Near Mint condition, completely scuff- and wear-free. The vinyl sounds great only having some very light occasional static. Track 1 of Side 1 has a couple of very light ticks, which probably will disappear if you change the balance of your tonearm. Most likely, the static also could get reduced or go away if the record was professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
