Up for sale is a very unusual and interesting copy of Black Sabbath’s legendary 1970 self-titled debut album. (Production year of record Unknown)
Condition:
* Vinyl: Mint Minus (M-)
* Sleeve: Near Mint Minus (NM-)
This is an unknown pressing/release and is most likely unofficial. It was acquired from a friend overseas some time ago. Both the record and sleeve closely imitate characteristics associated with the original UK Vertigo release, including the classic Vertigo swirl presentation and “Philips Record Product” identification.
What makes this particular copy especially interesting is its sound quality.
I own and have extensively listened to an official 1970 UK Vertigo first pressing, and this unusual copy sounds remarkably close to it. Compared directly with my original UK first press, this copy has a little more emphasis in the bass and midrange, but retains a surprisingly similar overall sonic character.
I have also A/B tested this copy against several other Sabbath pressings, including a UK second pressing, WWA pressing, and German pressing. Of the various alternative copies I have heard, this peculiar pressing comes remarkably close to the presentation of my genuine UK first press.
For that reason, I think this would make a fascinating addition for a serious Black Sabbath or Vertigo swirl collector who enjoys comparing different masterings and pressings. Put it up against an original first, second, third, or fourth UK pressing and draw your own conclusions—it is a genuinely interesting record to listen to and compare.
Please note: I am not representing this as an authentic 1970 UK first pressing. Its exact origin is unknown, and I believe it is most likely an unofficial release. It is being sold as an unusual collector/listening copy based on exactly what is pictured and described.
An excellent conversation piece and a surprisingly impressive-sounding copy of one of the most important heavy metal albums ever recorded.
