There are songbirds, and then, well, there are songbirds.
None, regardless of how you measure, even approach for a moment Miss Blossom Dearie. (And, yes, that is her birth given name.)
She was adored. In England, in fact, in the clubs, they would arrange all the chairs to face her. And when she began, with that girlish voice, that innocence that "would have her cross a battlefield unscathed," they said it was like a church. Quiet. Waiting for the next note.
This is her ONCE UPON A SUMMERTIME, with great material in TEA FOR TWO, SURREY WITH THE FRINGE ON TOP, IF I WERE A BELL, MANHATTAN, DOOP-DOO-DE-DOOP, and MOONLIGHT SAVING TIME, among others.
This is a Verve re-issue, a Polygram NY US pressing of the 1958 session, here in a jacket within fault, crisp; record within should play near mint.
Not to be missed. Nice copy.
