Blue Note 84401 Hank Mobley Quintet - The Feelin’s Good - Music Matters Sealed Limited Edition # 504

The music on this brilliant Hank Mobley date was not made available during the prime years of Blue Note, so this is an album that even the most devout collectors will not have in this format. The music created on March 7, 1963 was one of the great omissions from the Blue Note catalog. Mobley, Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock, Butch Warren and Philly Joe Jones are all familiar names to Blue Note collectors but, even for them, this set is special. Mobley and Byrd teamed up relatively few times in their careers, a real shame because on this album they cause sparks in each other’s playing, egging each other on to some of their most inspired playing. The rhythm section is also quite unique. Hancock and Jones had never played together, but the three players think magically as one and create the perfect setting for the intense solos of Mobley and Byrd. The sound quality gained from the master tape is phenomenal, The quintet, which never existed before or after this day, created musical history on their one session, displaying its own sound and carving out its own special place in Blue Note history.
