Bob Dylan Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3 Rare & Unreleased 1961-1991
- 5 LP vinyl boxed set
Background: I’ve owned this since new and am selling this as I now have a CD copy and I don’t really play vinyl.
Some of the 5 discs got played a few times and some hardly at all. The paper sleeves are all present and correct though you can see that they’ve been handled.
The box is completely intact and virtually unmarked – I’ve spotted tiny scuffs at the corners and there’s also a tiny brown stain on the front (on Bob’s cheek!) where there’s also a very slight abrasion. You couldn’t quite say ‘new condition’ but considering its age I’d say the box is very good indeed.
The book is all present and correct and stapled. The cover shows it’s been read a few times but is in very good condition – there are some very slight / barely visible brown marks on the cover and it smells a little fusty but no yellowing or anything to the pages – again excellent condition for its age I’d say.
It’s a similar story with the record sleeves – no rips, tears or folds but some slight bending at the edges and you can see that they’ve been handled a few times.
As for the vinyl – well, I remember playing some of the discs a few times and some hardly at all. I also played the odd track here and there more often than the rest. There’s absolutely loads of brilliant stuff on these discs but I tended not to play the later stuff, the demo versions or early versions of songs I already knew.
Sides 1 and 2 will have been played a few times. Side 1 appears to be in great condition with side 2 having some very minor scuffing.
Sides 3 and 4 have similar very minor scuffing consistent with the amount of times I played it (not very many but will probably have been in lowish double figures).
Sides 5 and 6 look pretty much unplayed condition but I will have played them a few times – probably in single figures though.
Sides 7 and 8 seem to be somewhere between – some barely noticeable scuffing but really good condition – same goes for sides 9 and 10 – I remember picking out ‘Blind Willie McTell’ to play a few times from side 10 as for me it’s firmly in the top 10 of Dylan songs ever!
I took various photos to try to show the condition but most of them were pretty useless I’m afraid, I’ve put the best ones on. I found some record grading information on the internet and I’d say the condition was “Very Good Plus (VG+)”
The music:
This is just my opinion of course but if you’re buying this to listen to Dylan stuff you haven’t already got you may well find it falls into 3 thirds – least interesting are the alternative versions of things you already know. Then there are the songs you didn’t know which are well, pretty good but you can maybe see why they were left off the album as it were. But around a third of these songs are absolutely brilliant and it’s difficult to believe how they can have remained unreleased for so long – sides 3 and 4 are like a lost album from around 1964 and it’s worth having the box set just for those tracks. Sides 1 and 2 are nearly as good and especially good for early Dylan fans – Sides 5 to 10 are a bit more hit and miss but Blind Wille McTell on side 10 is to my mind an absolute classic!
