Cover: ex- (small sticker residue on front; faint ring wear) Excellent and rare experimental jazz set by this legendary producer, enlisting the help of many friends he has worked with over the years, with contributions from Ornette Coleman, Elvin Jones, Joe Farrell, Jon Appleton, Charlie Haden, and many others. Stylistically this epic double album is all over the map, ranging from free jazz to avant-trad to blues to electronic and grouping the dozens of players in widely varying ensembles. Early electronic music collectors will especially cherish "A Few Thoughts For The Day," a sidelong gem which combines Appleton's musique concrete tape manipulations and synthesizers with avant garde big band sounds, featuring samples of news broadcasts and speeches of famous revolutionary figures of the day - "In other words, we put in the new orchestral music and the latest in electronic sounds, together with the voices and sounds of the destruction of the world." Side two is a 6-part suite called "The Jazz Story" which traces the history of jazz from blues to free improv, and side three consists of a tribute to John Coltrane featuring Elvin and Ornette.

Thiele was a jazz producer, musician, songwriter, and record label executive who worked with John Coltrane, Art Hodes, Yank Lawson, Lester Young, Errol Garner, Coleman Hawkins, Charles Mingus, Oliver Nelson, Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, Charlie Haden, Earl Hines, Johnny Hodges, Quincy Jones, Count Basie, Gato Barbieri, David Murray, Lonnie Liston Smith, Clark Terry, Duke Ellington, and Louis Armstrong; he helped discover and launch the careers of Teresa Brewer, the McGuire Sisters, Lawrence Welk, Buddy Holly, Henry Mancini, Steve and Eydie, and Jackie Wilson, ran the Bluesway, Flying Dutchman, Blues Time, Dr. Jazz, and Red Baron labels, and may be best known for writing the song "It's a Wonderful World." Jon Appleton is a filmmaker and early electronic music composer who studied under Pierre Schaeffer at the INA-GRM musique concrete studios (home of Luc Ferrari, Francois Bayle, Pierre Henry, Bernard Parmegiani, Francois-Bernard Mache, Ivo Malec, etc.); he also worked at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center of Vladimir Ussachevsky, Otto Luening, Ilhan Mimaroglu, and Milton Babbitt, at Swedish Radio with text sound proponents Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Sten Hanson and Bengt-Emil Johnson, at the Bregman Electronic Music Studio at Dartmouth College alongside Christian Wolff, and at the NHK Tokyo Electronic Music Studio where Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Karlheinz Stockhausen pioneered electronic music. Appleton helped with the design and construction of the Synclavier, one of the first digital synthesizers, and has associated closely with Steve Reich.
