"Following on from its first instalment, Boombox 2 keeps the block party going with another 14 lesser-spotted cuts from hip-hop’s first flowering, tracing their history beyond the disco scene they grew from.
Before samplers, and before the MC rose in prominence over the DJ, hip-hop was essentially a vehicle for good-times jams. Not even necessarily understood as a major cultural revolution at first, many of the labels that sought to commit it to wax simply saw it as the next hip black craze (the in-depth sleeve notes make connections beyond doo wop and even back to the Harlem Renaissance of the 20s), and ushered bands into the studio, essentially to record disco licks for MCs to hype over. Everyone knows the story behind Rapper’s Delight’s debt to Chic, but Boombox 2 uncovers the likes of TJ Swann, Pee Wee Mel & Swann Controllers’ Maximus Party, which, in a kind of real-time sample, lifts its bassline from Queen’s Another One Bites The Dust.
Most of these selections fit the template: infectious, hypnotic and mostly concerned with moving a crowd. Flip to Terry Lewis & Wild Flower’s The Peoples Message Take Two, however, and you’ll find strains of the new thing. Coming hot on the heels of Flash and co’s The Message, and just about edging ahead of Run-DMC’s 1984 debut album, it’s a million years behind It’s Like That in sound, but its focus on social ills and domestic violence arrive just in time."
