Boris  With Merzbow Heavy Vinyl Stencilled Sleeve Rare!

ULTRA HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL EDITION IN A SUBLIME DIE-CUT TRIPLE WIDE GATEFOLD PACKAGE - EXTREMELY LIMITED NUMBERED COPIES - 1000 ONLY FOR THE WORLD. Last seen collaborating on a Godzilla-sized sludge metal reinterpretation of the Beatles' 'I Am The Walrus', these two iconic presences in Japanese noise have come together once again, this time in the format of an all-conquering live showdown. The more cynical among you might say: "This merely sounds like Boris going about their business whilst Merzbow screeches away over the top." My retort to you being: correct. And how ace is that? In all fairness though, there is a genuine synergy between the two acts on this double-disc magnum opus, with Merzbow's acrid oscillations howling sympathetically alongside the band's rampaging, fuzz-soaked clamour, at times as though he was a guest soloist. You might even go so far as to compare Merzbow's role here as similar to that played by Michio Kuihara on the Rainbow album, weaving his way around the onslaught of detuned, twin-necked guitar riffs, cutting the mix asunder with his trebly lacerations. Part of Boris' charm lies in their inconsistency as an outfit. It's easy to pick holes in some of the more technical aspects of performance: the drumming can be a tad sloppy, and more than a little repetitive and the guitar slurry can sometimes come across as a little too unyielding for its own good. That's why the presence of creative, freeform artists like Masami Akita or Michio Kuihara tend to liven up the band's sound, adding an element of chaos and spontaneous dynamism that otherwise would be hard to maintain over a sprawling two volume set like this. As it stands, Rock Dream has the kind of rock & roll integrity that it's hard to find outside of... well, the '70s I guess. You might see this as a kind of 21st century avant-metal equivalent of Kiss' Alive album in fact, though presumably minus the blood capsules and makeup. Awesome stuff, limited copies, and gorgeous packaging...
