ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome and quite rare LP from Ducretet Thomson (320 C 135, brown/white red border label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features that under-rated master conductor Ernest Bour and the Südwestfunkorchester Baden-Baden (SWF: Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra) in glorious performances of Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major Op. 73 and the Variations on a Theme by Haydn Op. 56a, both warmly recorded in Stuttgart in July 1955.
Though he is perhaps more associated with 20th Century music than with the classical and romantic eras, Bour brought a penetrating musicianship and expert stick technique to all that he conducted – the SWF Orchestra, as was always the case, responds resplendently to their Music Director, producing a deeply burnished sound, with no lack of rhythmic bite or power.
Incidentally, there are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, in French only, by Luc-André Marcel. The front cover photo is credted to M. Bizos.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is slight bumping/wear at corners, as well as some discoloration and ringwear to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive in appearance – overall, this rates as as very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is EXCELLENT-. There is a small pressing bubble on Side 2 (4th Mvt of Brahms Symphony No. 2) that causes a very soft tic for a few revolutions; otherwise, the playback is quite superb. However, those requiring CD silent surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a near-excellent collector's copy.
