Description

A superb piece of late-1970s and early-1980s yacht rock, soul, and soft rock history: an original vintage vinyl radio promo copy of Boz Scaggs' multi-platinum compilation album, Hits!, released in November 1980.
Released in late 1980, Hits! served as a victory lap for Boz Scaggs following one of the most commercially successful runs of the decade. After cutting his teeth as a blues guitarist with the Steve Miller Band, Scaggs retooled his sound in 1976 with his 5x-platinum masterpiece, Silk Degrees. By blending sleek R&B rhythms, horn sections, and pop melodies, he became a founding architect of what would later be dubbed "Yacht Rock" or West Coast AOR.
The compilation gathers definitive radio tracks from Silk Degrees, Down Two Then Left, and Middle Man, while introducing two new standout tracks: the dramatic ballad "Look What You've Done To Me" (written for the Urban Cowboy soundtrack) and the infectiously funky "Miss Sun". The backing instrumentation across these tracks features the cream of the crop of L.A. session musicians—including David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, and Steve Lukather—who would simultaneously go on to form the multi-platinum band Toto.
This compilation perfectly curates Scaggs' peak era, bringing together timeless, smooth, groove-heavy classics like "Lowdown," "Lido Shuffle," and the hit single "Miss Sun". Because radio station promo copies were pressed using fresh, unworn metal stampers right off the master tapes, this release features an incredibly punchy, clean, and dynamic soundstage.
This is a highly collectible 1980 U.S. White Label Promotional First Pressing on Columbia Records (Catalog # FC 36841 / BL-36841). Rather than the standard red Columbia label, this copy features the official white radio promo labels. It contains the early, audiophile-preferred Pitman Pressing "D-cut" matrix etchings in the dead wax:  • Side 1: P PAL-36841-1D • Side 2: P PBL-36841-2D
