Early Stereo Week here at 33anda3rd!. Lots of 60's stereo in this list accompanying this lp, plus unusual repertoire and limited pressings.
A special treat for the audiophile Opera lover here: Britten's Death in Venice on Decca SET 581-3,a 3Lp box set where all the discs are pink labels Test Pressings. All have the 1G ending to their stampers, signifying first off the presses after being mastered by Ted Burkett, whom High End Audio single out as the one who consistently creates the finest audio experience from his mastering where comparative same recordings exist. This is also considered the high point of their art as engineers. Of course there is no point trying to just buy Burkett mastered deccas, because he would have worked on less than a fifth of the classical output of the label, as a member of a full time team. Here they are though, on this opera just as it was about to go on the market in 1974. Each inner has the separate sides info sheets attached to it, plus the overall info sheets are included in the box, stapled together. Here we learn that this was for US issue before the Uk issue, with the Home issue box marked TBA (to be advised), with the export box marked Immediate. Steuart Bedford conducts the English Opera Group and the ECO, with Peter Pears and John Shirley-Quirke. Tests of number ones are surely the closest thing to the master tapes?. These usually turn up as single discs, great to be able to offer the full set with the box and all the sheets.
This record set is unmarked near mint throughout the six sides, in an near mint box, records not warped, labels are clean.
