Featuring (and signed on front cover by) Joe Brown and Vicki Brown
This very rare LP, Cat No BELLS 208, was the debut album from Brown’s Home Brew, a group headed by Joe Brown (best known for hits like “A Picture Of You", "It Only Took A Minute”, "That's What Love Will Do" and “What A Crazy World We’re Living In”) and his late wife Vicki (a popular session singer and former member of The Vernons Girls). This line up enabled Joe to go out and perform songs he’d written himself without being under any pressure to sing all the hits he was expected to include in his main shows.
I bought this album when it was released and later found the band were to perform in a room over a pub in Wolverhampton - surprising as Joe’s normal shows were mainly in theatres. Joe, Vicki and the band performed brilliantly to a small but enthusiastic audience in a very relaxed atmosphere and in the interval I got Joe and Vicki to sign my album. As Joe did this he jokingly said “So you’re the one who bought it!” perhaps an indication that it was already set to become a collector’s item.
Regarding the condition of the album, as it’s almost forty years old and has been well used the top and bottom edges of the cover look a bit worn but otherwise the cover is all intact and as you can see from the pictures the front still carries the autographs “Best Wishes Joe Brown” and “Love Vicki Brown”. As I played the disc a lot in its early days, I have to confess that it now carries a lot of fine surface scratches and when recently checking it on an old music centre I was conscious of background clicks and other surface noise, particularly during quiet sections, although I could still enjoy the music. On this one playing the tracks played through normally apart from the only instrumental track, which is towards the end of the album, which did skip in a couple of places.
Incidentally, I see from a “Completed listings” search on eBay that just a couple of weeks ago an unsigned copy of this same album was apparently sold for over £300 by a USA seller . While I’m not expecting such a figure, particularly as my copy is in a more worn condition, this does perhaps indicate just how few of these albums seem to be around. Tracks on the album are Billy Come Down, Home Brew, I Wrote A Song, Poor John, Marching Seasons, Hossannah, Big Lucy, Work song, Mumbles, Rabbit Man. The first song is written by Brown, Cook, Greenaway and all the others by J. Brown.
