Description
This is a very rare 12" diameter Brunswick 78 rpm record with multiple artists, including the venerable Bing Crosby, The Mills Brothers, The Boswell Sisters, Connie Boswell solo, Frank Munn and Tommy Dorsey, listed on the label as "Thomas Dorsey", but the sound is unmistakeable! It is Brunswick # 20202. It's even rarer to find it in this excellent condition. And read the extra at the end of this auction description.
The label on the first side reads as follows, and I quote: Instrumental with vocal Choruses. GEMS FROM "GEORGE WHITE'S SCANDALS"...Pt. 1. Introducing "Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries" (a) This Is The Missus (b) The Thrill Is Gone (c) My Song -Lew Brown Ray Henderson- VICTOR YOUNG and THE BRUNSWICK ORCHESTRA; Vocal Choruses by Bing Crosby, Boswell Sisters and Frank Munn. Trombone passage by Thomas Dorsey.
The label on the second side says, and I quote: GEMS FROM "GEORGE WHITE'S SCANDALS"...Pt. 2 (a) That's Love (b) That's Why Darkies Were Born (c) Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries -Lew Brown Ray Henderson - VICTOR YOUNG and THE BRUNSWICK ORCHESTRA; Vocal Choruses by Bing Crosby, Boswell Sisters, Connie Boswell, Frank Munn and The Mills Brothers.
This 78 was probably recorded in 1930 or '31. It is a very rare gem which I purchased at a hefty price from Jacob Schneider of New York City in the early 1970's. He was known as "The World's Greatest Record Collector" and had a quarter million discs stored somewhere. Apparently he could go out and find anything in his storage room/warehouse. Using a good turntable and stylus, I copied these songs onto a cassette back then and put the record away for safe storage. But I'm getting over the hill and it's time for someone else to enjoy this very rare gem.
The condition of the record is Excellent, with only a little wear and no chips, scrapes, etc. The labels are a beautiful gold ink on black background and are in excellent condition. The main wear is from being sandwiched beteween other records for all those years!
An interesting observation: Recordings those days were done all simultaneously. Everyone on the recording was right there in the recording studio. Well, Frank Munn sings "That's Why Darkies Were Born" on side two. The lyrics, while not negative, are still very racist! And on the same recording side are The Mills Brothers! They had to be right there in the recording studio. It makes for an interesting question, with 20-20 hindsight on the race question. How did they feel being sung about as "darkies"? You judge for yourself. But when it's their turn to sing, they come through 100%, as do all the artists on this great record. Apparently there was an artist comaraderie of sorts which long preceded the Civil Rights issues which came later. An interesting view, however.
Shipping is $10.00 in the USA, securely packed and insured to anywhere in the USA. It's $22.50 to most others countries. Thanks for looking, reading and bidding, if in fact you do. Regardless, have a great week.
