Description
* Ritchie Venus And The Blue Beetles- Candy/Lighthouse 7" (Onset/Offset PR 2378)
* Campbell & Jim- Drink To You one sided 7” [special edition of 100 copies] (Unwucht Musik)
Two 7" from New Zealand's deep 1980's underground.
First is a limited edition of 100 7" (this is 090/100) issued by Unwucht Musik with the first 100 subscriptions to their NZ Onset/Offset series of archival recordings to accompany the first 100 copies of their "Krypton 10" double LP (so if you have "Krypton 10" without the 7" the addition of this immediately mades your's one of the 100). This dates from 1984 and the one sided single features a song that, other than this edition of 100 rarity, only appeared on the 5 song cassette "Krypton Hits - Krypton Green". This single is classic NZ lo-fi mid 80's wonderment!
Each came with a screen shot print out of a Scorched Earth Policy video, so...super bonus!!
* Campbell is Campbell Mclay who was head of Onset/Offset, a very cool deep indie in NZ back in the early to mid-80's. Mclay was a member of Bill Direen's Builders as well as the Flying Nun band Scorched Earth Policy. Mclay also played with Dillinger's Brain, The Bottletops, The Riptoids & Toerag.
* Jim is Jim Nicholson who joined Mclay as a member of Toerag & The Bottletops, both of who issued releases on Onset/Offset.
Ritchie Venus 7" was released in New Zealand in 1987, Ritchie Venus & The Blue Beetles were an odd bunch, he first appeared on Flying Nun Records in 1982 with Bleeding Heart. Venus sometimes has the look of an Elvis impersonator but Candy is a brilliant garage-y punk record they kind of which you'd hear from someone raised on The New York Dolls and later Velvet Underground, or Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers.
My opinion is that these are both gems!
