Cándido Antomattei is a son montuno, Afro-Cuban, latin jazz, and mambo singer, guitarist, music gig contractor, and guitar maker of Puerto Rican origin. He became a member of Arsenio Rodríguez's band also known as aconjunto in Puerto Rico in 1952. The band itself is considered to be one of the first founding bands, if not the first of musical genres such as mambo, and subsequently the roots of salsa. It is also said that Arsenio Rodríguez himself is the true creator of mambo. Cándido has performed with Arsenio from his time in Puerto Rico at the Escambrón Beach Club near Parque Sixto Escobar, San Juan through to his arrival in Spanish Harlem, New York City in 1953. Cándido was the second voice of the band, and as it is currently known, Cándido is featured on seven of Arsenio's albums as a vocalist and guitarist. Oftentimes he appears alongside another vocalist René Scull, who is Arsenio's cousin and a founding member of the first Arsenio Rodríguez conjunto. In addition to these albums, Cándido Antomattei also has two albums of his own. On his album Candido Y Las Super Estrellas, Cándido acts as the singer and director. Likewise the albums feature Arsenio Rodríguez in the band. Cándido Antomattei is living on now through his son, who is also an artist. His son Caesar Antomattei is not a mambo or salsa muscian, but rather literally a professional artist living in New York City who draws comics books.
