Label/Format: Liberty - original blue format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both look fantastic: very clean and attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Both almost as fresh and clean as new, one from that DJ collection recently acquired, and this time his name is on the back cover. More details further down.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 143 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce especially as the ultimate first pressing in such wonderful conditions. The name on the back cover is Peter Drummond (please see close-up). A famous radio DJ of the 1960s and 70s. This man was actually a member of the crew of the pirate radio ship ‘Caroline’ in the late 60s. He then worked for BBC radio. Most albums from this collection were the earliest made and some as promos. So not only a scarce original album in fantastic condition, also a small piece of history too.

Brief Info: Brilliant second album and now featuring most self-written material that includes the magnificent hit single ‘On the Road Again’. I can hardly explain just how fantastic this song sounds on this its proper album. Compilations just don’t hit the mark. As soon as those real deep bass notes kick in and that beautiful harmonica riff starts you know you are hearing a classic. Few bands of this genre did it better than Canned Heat, this is boogie blues of the highest calibre and sounding stunning on this immaculately preserved earliest pressing. Open the can and get this fizzing from the speakers soon.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderate+.

Cover Grade and Format: NOT taking into account of the Mr Drummond’s signature on the back cover, I happily grade this lovely cover Mint(-). A single format with front lamination that wraps around the spine edge on to the back for approx quarter-of-an-inch. Printed and made in England.

Lamination & Front: Stunning and that is no understatement. Apart from the odd small surface crease or two, this front is almost as made and looks breathtaking. The laminate looks almost brand new with a glass-like shine and barely even a surface mark or hairline to be seen. The shine is incredible as is the clarity and the colourful artwork has to be seen for real to be fully appreciated. Vivid rich colour, just like new. All laminate is fully adhered too with no lifting or blisters and even under light, I can see no friction rubs or dulling. The right edge sees the laminate just short of full width but even the exposed strip has no wear or grime-line formation. What an absolute joy, this will give immense pleasure to even the most critical of connoisseur collectors.

Cover Back: I have zoomed-in on Drummond’s signature, this was one of his from way back in the late 60s. He rarely put his name on covers but did here. I guarantee, it’s fully authentic and genuine. The end of the laminate has a little grubbiness which is hardly unusual but this being the only noteworthy clue to age and only blemish on what is a superb back. Any marks or handling traces barely register and the lack of ringwear with such a solid thick record inside for 40 odd years is simply astonishing.

Top Edge: No real wear and very straight.

Bottom Edge: Similar again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly sharp with minimal trace of wear wear and no feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All very neat and sharp with few traces of wear.

Cover Summary: A gorgeous all round example of this classic late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. The front is well-worthy of another look. This beautiful item should please many collectors and will be of interest to historians with Drummond’s sig on the back. This man’s record was there with him at the forefront of the golden age of quality music.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++ / Mint(-), with just a tiny mark on ‘My Crime’ with just a couple or three sporadic ticks, the only blemish I noted on the entire album. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy even played on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage Liberty classic plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault bar those brief ticks as mentioned above. How many records this great age will not have the odd light audio blemish? Let’s be honest, it’s just that I mention them so collectors know what they are getting. We all know what a high percentage of record this age will look and sound like, I have stated this many times. This is a other treasure time, and vintage unsubtle equipment has avoided. This has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A supreme hi-fi recording and this record excels - ‘On the Road Again’ is simply breathtaking with the deepest sound you could wish to hear. Any other surface sounds barely registered and no other pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
