ARTIST AND TITLE: Cantrell & Williams - 'Mississippi River Song - Tapioca'

ISSUE: Single sided 7" Gramophone & Typewriter 4267

CONDITION: V, pretty average for a 1902 7-incher.

COMMENTS: Banjoist/vocalist Edgar Allen Cantrell and mandolinist/vocalist Richard Williams have been described as the 'Missing Link' that bridges minstrelsy, ragtime, country music and the Blues, and nothing like it exists on American recordings until the 1920s. Both born in the mid - 1860s, they left the US in 1893 and settled in Europe, and in doing so preserved the musical style of their youth, including many old-time songs, such as this one. Richard Williams died in 1911 and Cantrell returned to the US after a stint fighting with the Belgian Army at the outbreak of WW1. This side was recorded in London in 1902 and there are four known copies, including the one in the EMI Archives. I doubt if you will see another copy for a long time! Realistic reserve reflects its historic value and extreme rarity.
