Trout Mask Replica is the third studio album by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, released in June, 1969. The album was produced by Frank Zappa, a friend and former schoolmate of Beefheart, and was originally released on Zappa's Straight Records imprint. Combining blues, avant-garde, free jazz and other disparate genres of American music, Trout Mask Replica is regarded as an important work of experimental music and a major influence in alternative rock. A widely recognized and acclaimed composition, Trout Mask Replica appears at number fifty-eight on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".
The famous BBC disc jockey John Peel said of the album: "If there has been anything in the history of popular music which could be described as a work of art in a way that people who are involved in other areas of art would understand, then Trout Mask Replica is probably that work." Peel's playing of the record on late-night radio in Britain was largely responsible for its reaching 21 in the UK charts.
Critic Steve Huey writes that the album's influence "was felt more in spirit than in direct copycatting, as a catalyst rather than a literal musical starting point. However, its inspiring reimagining of what was possible in a rock context laid the groundwork for countless experiments in rock surrealism to follow, especially during the punk/new wave era." Cartoonist and writer Matt Groening tells of listening to Trout Mask Replica at the age of 15 and thinking "that it was the worst thing I'd ever heard. I said to myself, they're not even trying! It was just a sloppy cacophony. Then I listened to it a couple more times, because I couldn't believe Frank Zappa could do this to me - and because a double album cost a lot of money. About the third time, I realised they were doing it on purpose; they meant it to sound exactly this way. About the sixth or seventh time, it clicked in, and I thought it was the greatest album I'd ever heard".
In his 1995 book, "The Alternative Music Almanac", Alan Cross placed the album in the #2 spot on the list of '10 Classic Alternative Albums'. In 1995, Mojo put the album 28th on their "The 100 Greatest Albums Ever Made" list and 51st on their list of "The 100 Records That Changed the World".

PRODUCED ON "STRAIGHT" RECORDS, THIS LP BEARS THE FIRST PRESS A1/B1/C1/D1 MATRIX MARKINGS, AND HAS THE SAME CAT NUMBERS ON THE SLEEVE AS ON THE RECORD LABLES (STS 1053), PROVING IT TO BE A FIRST PRESS.
SLEEVE
THE ORIGINAL UK PRINTED EJ DAY SLEEVE IS IN GREAT CONDITION.THE FRONT IS CLEAN, WITH MINIMAL RING WEAR AND NO PEN MARKINGS OR STICKERS.THE INSIDE IS AS CLEAN AND BRIGHT AS WHEN IT WAS FIRST SOLD, DIFFICULT TO FAULT. THE REAR IS CLEAN AND BRIGHT WITH NO PEN MARKINGS OR STICKERS. THERE IS SOME EDGE WEAR ALL ROUND, THE SPINE HAS WEAR BUT THE TITLE AND CAT NUMBER ARE CLEARLY VISIBLE. THIS REALLY IS A SUPERB SLEEVE FOR ALL ITS FORTY YEARS!
VINYLS
BOTH VINYLS PROVIDE EXCELLENT PLAYBACK WITH ONLY VERY SLIGHT MINIMAL BACKGROUND NOISE IN PLACES. THE ONLY MARKS I CAN FIND ON THE VINYL ARE A COUPLE OF SCUFF LINES ON RECORD TWO, SIDE FOUR, AND A SLIGHT HAIRLINE ON SIDE THREE, BUT THESE ARE NOT SCRATCHES, AND THEY DO NOT AFFECT AUDIO PLAYBACK.
ALL FOUR LABELS ARE CLEAN AND FRESH, WITH NO PEN MARKINGS OR STICKERS. THE ONLY BLEMISH IS A SCUFF LINE ON RECORD ONE, SIDE ONE, A THIN WHITE LINE OF A COUPLE OF CM ABOVE THE "33 1/3" NUMBER. THERE IS MINIMAL SPIDERING AND NO SPINDLE WEAR. THE LABELS BEAR THE FIRST PRESS CAT NUMBERS 2 STS 1053 ON ALL FOUR SIDES AS PER A TRUE FIRST PRESS. THE VERY FIRST PRESS MATRIX MARKINGS IN THE DEAD WAX ARE AS FOLLOWS:
