DIDDY WAH DIDDY
One wonders what the Lancaster High School, which included Frank Zappa and Van Vliet could have been like. After playing briefly with a band called The Blackouts, the 'mad captain' took the name Captain Beefheart and formed The Magic Band in 1964, which was based in Los Angeles.
His first single for A & M was a version of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy" paired with his original "Who Do You Think You're Fooling." It was released with no promotion in April of '66 and died without a whimper. A second single would follow in October and would meet a similar fate.
Though he would soon evolve into surrealistic lyrics, wayout words and deranged blend of rock and blues, this is his roots, garage period. You get a great blues rock beat, with that monstrous, danger filled voice that the Capt. wields. What was Herb Alpert thinking when he signed Beefheart? This wasn't anything like the Sandpipers, Tiajuana Brass or Baja Marimba Band.
The failure of his first two singles for A&M didn't stop him from recording an album, although he was shown the door before it could be released. His next label, Buddah, did unleash it on the unsuspecting public. A legend was born.
