The arrival of Geoff Richardson on viola was originally greeted with derision by Caravan’s long-time fan base, but he is what made me eventually fall in love with this album—my first taste of Caravan. Richard Sinclair is gone, replaced by the talented John G. Perry, but Dave Sinclair returns to the organ stool, with synthesizers in tow (for the first time on a Caravan record).
It helps that Pye Hastings has written a solid and wonderful set of songs here, but Martyn Ford’s orchestrations really make them come alive when they appear, namely on “Memory Lain, Hugh” and “A Hunting We Shall Go.” The latter is one of Caravan’s absolute high points as a band, jamming intensely as hot as the hottest fusion band, and featuring a gradually building, orchestrated vehicle for a synthesizer solo based on a theme from Soft Machine’s “Slightly All the Time.” Utter brilliance.
