Description

Pablo Casals (1876-1973) plays all six Bach suites for solo cello in this historic recording originally captured in mono between 1936 and 1939. Casals himself discovered these towering masterpieces at the age of 13 in a second-hand music shop in 1890. He then studied them for twelve years before giving their first performance to a modern audience. This box set is an electronic reprocessing by EMI of the 1970s to give a stereo effect.

   Suite No. 5 in C minor (BWV 1011)

   Suite No. 6 in G (BWV 1007)

Bought by myself when new and played once through. No scratches, although some long-term dust will need careful removal. Box is generally worn and scuffed, corners worn but not broken. Insert has some minor foxing, otherwise in good condition. Includes a nine-page critical analysis of the suites by the composer, Tristram Cary, and a brief biography (plus photo) of Casals.
