This one caught me off guard. I guess I was expecting a rather tame set of English jazz-rock. Instead, the first time I spun this one, I felt like I'd gone through an aural mugging! Produced by Patrick Meehan Fur, 1971's "Catapilla" features four sprawling group-originals. Tracks such as the brutal lead off 'Naked Death' and ''Promises offer up an intriguing mix of progressive, jazz-rock and psychedelic influences. Propelled by Anna Meek's shrill, piercing and occasionally out of control voice and the Robert Calvert, Hugh Eaglestone and Thiery Rheinhart triple sax line up, this one's simply unlike anything else I've recent heard. It isn't going to appeal to everyone, but the results are pretty stunning. Perhaps the only real disappointment is the album's shortest and most commercial venture (I use the term loosely) - 'Tumbleweed'. At the other end of the spectrum, the side long 'Embryonic Fusion' is a technically stunning effort. Clocking in at over 23 minutes many folks won't be able to get through it in one take, but take my word for it, Calvert and Eaglestone turn in some amazing performances. One last warning - unless you have ulterior motives, be sure you don't play this one around anyone with a heart condition ...

One of he rarest of all the Vertigo records. It sold in minute quantities and was soon deleted.
Stereo only. There were no mono releases. This is a first pressing with the unlaminated
gatefold sleeve. Most of these sleeves suffered from excessive wear and
most show signs of ringwear both front and back. Not this one. See photos.
Some minor edge/corner wear. For some reason the previous
owner has put a red strip on the front cover.
The sleeve has some slight edge wear again seen in the photos but absolutely nothing serious.
No folds No tears No writing.
Strong fully legible spine. No damage to print. So rare like this.(see photos).
The inner bag has the correct first press "British Patent No.800513 & 973979" text.
AND is the correct Vertigo swirl dated 3/71 -- the month the LP was released.
Slight discolouring with age. They all have this as the fixant ages. Usually worse than this.
First press matrix marks 636 0029 1Y//1 and 636 0029 2Y//1
The labels are in awesome condition with no bleaching of colours and no spindle trails.
Look at the photos to see how good these labels are.
Now for the record itself. A couple of bits of very light crackle.
Absolutely nothing serious. Otherwise the record plays superbly
and I would grade as EASILY EX++.
There are no marks no tics no clicks no repeats no jumps.
So here we have a first press unlaminated gatefold sleeve,
first press 0371 dated inner sleeve and first press 1Y//1 & 2Y//1 matrix marks
on one of Vertigo's rarest releases.
So there is absolutely no doubt that this is an original first press of this prog rock monster.
The Disc is FULLY PLAY TESTED. NOT JUST GUESSED AT!
