  Caterina Valente IN BRAZIL - April 1961 - June 1968

  Caterina Valente visited Brazil in April 1961. By this time she had been popular in Europe for almost 10 years. She sang at Teatro Record on rua da Consolação in Sao Paulo that was then something like a South American version of Paris's Olympia. Caterina would do a one-hour recital every night for six days in a row. On Saturday and Sunday Caterina performed at 2 different times plus a few extra appearances at Fasano, then the most luxurious restaurant and some night-clubs.

  Caterina Valente in Sao Paulo: Flying straight from New York singer & actress Caterina Valente arrived in Sao Paulo on 8 April 1961.
  
  Caterina is German but was born in Paris of Italian parents and lives actually in Switzerland. She's one of the most prominent names in European pop music today. She sings in Italian, French, German, Spanish and even in Portuguese and her records have been hits all over Europe. When asked which language she preferred Caterina said it depended on the type of music: she prefers French for 'up-tempo' songs and Italian is better for melancholy tunes.
  
  Caterina declared she has a soft spot for South American music saying that nowadays Brazilian music is maybe the best in the world. She said she'll record as many Brazilian songs as possible in the near future.
  
  Television & social-political stance
  
  Miss Valente performs on TV, cinema, recording-studios and 'tours de chants'. She thinks cinema is 'too cold'. She prefers performing live before the public. She says television will soon be the most popular means of communication. We'll have to bow down to TV's power.
  
  Talking about jazz Caterina regrets that it is not sufficiently understood. She says she has molded her artistic personality on jazz. To Caterina an artist should not constrain him-herself to social problems of his-her time which places her as an 'anti-engagement' performer which in itself is a political position.
  
  'I have no immediate interest beyond music but living a simple life taking advantage of all the good things life give us'.
  
  8 April 1961 (Saturday) - Caterina Valente arrived in Sao Paulo saying she is a big fan of Maysa and Agostinho dos Santos in a halting but legitimate Portuguese. Caterina has already recorded Maysa's 'Felicidade infeliz' (Unhappy happiness) and 'Diz-me em setembro' (Dimmelo in settembre) which she recorded in Portugal.
  
  10 April 1961 (Monday) - daily 'Ultima Hora' says Caterina Valente borrowed a Volkswagen beetle from Maria Elisa, a TV Record public-relations manager she befriended as soon as she arrived and drove around the city of Sao Paulo going anywhere she fancied. Caterina said she owns a Karmann-Ghia at home but bought a new Merceds Benz which has got more space. Caterina spent the week-end at TV Record boss Paulinho Machado de Carvalho's country house (chacara) not far from the city.
  
  11 April 1961 (Tuesday) - Caterina Valente spent the afternoon rehearsing with her band that's got Robert De Ryke on piano, Jean Warland in the bass and James Pratt at the drums. There was a happy atmosphere among them for they hadn't seen each other for some time; Caterina had flown from New York where she stayed for some time and the band flew from Switzerland. The night before Miss Valente had been to Fasano restaurant (where she will perform later in the week) to see Brazilian folk-singer Inezita Barroso and was positively impressed by Inezita's singing and guitar playing.

  12 April 1961 (Wednesday) - Caterina Valente opened last night with applause & flowers at Teatro Record. Showing a tremendous vitality she started at exactly 10:00 PM with a packed theatre. Caterina sang 16 songs starting with 'When I fall in love' following it up with 'Quelle jolie façon de brûler' a sort of a poem in French with the backing of only a bass and finger-snapping.
  
  Note from the blogger: Actually the Brazilian journalist who covered Caterina's recital was completely in the dark concerning this song: 'Quelle jolie façon de brûler' was nothing else but Caterina's rendition of '39 de fièvre' a cover of 'Fever' first released as an instrumental in 1956 by Little Willie John and then covered by Peggy Lee (and Caterina herself a little later) in 1958.
  Then she talked to the audience in Italian promissing she would do it in Portuguese by next Monday. She then sang Domenico Modugno's 'Libera', 'Bon jour l'amour' in German and 'Diz-me em setembro' in a rumba mode.
  Guitarrist: Caterina then picked up a guitar and strummed Gilbert Becàud's 'Les amours de décembre' while making jokes about the cold, winter-time and snow. Caterina has complete dominion over her voice making absurd variations with the harmony and rhythm. She showed all her versatility in  'Personality'. The romantic ballad 'Nessuno al mondo' was her most popular number.
  
  Next Caterina sang 'Eh oh' which is none other than Dorival Caymmi's 1956's 'Maracangalha' in the French language. She sang 'Maracangalha's last refrain in a faultless Portuguese. Then she confessed to the audience she was afraid of singing Portugal's 'Bruxaria' but her Portuguese was excellent.
  
  Caterina Valente was backed by her own band and a full Teatro Record Orchestra conducted by Gabriel Migliori. Her 14th number was Ernesto Lecuona's 'Malagueña' that introduced her to the European charts 7 years ago and finally 'Andalucia' (The breeze and I). At this point the stage was filled with flowers in nosegays and bouquets. She took her guitar again and sang 'How much I love you' accompanied by the bass player. She had 4 curtain calls and would still linger on but she had to hush to Pinheiros Sports Club where she had an night-club appointment at mid-night. During the show her German husband Erik van Aro sat at the last row and watched the reaction of the public.
  
  
  When Caterina Valente came to Brazil in April 1961, she had already recorded this EP which had 'Bruxaria' (Witchcraf) written by Portuguese A. Alguero & A. Ribeiro; 'És diferente' (You are different) by A. Alguero & A. Guijarro) backed with 'Diz-me em setembro', a cover of Caterina's Italian hit 'Dimmelo en settembre' and 'Pide' in Spanish.
  
  As Caterina made a point of singing 'Bruxaria' and 'Diz-me em setembro' in her Sao Paulo recitals we think she may have had a notion that Portugal and Brazil were similar countries because they spoke the same language but that was as far from the truth as it could be. To start with even the word 'bruxaria' is not commonly used in Brazilian-Portuguese; 'feitiço' is a much better word. Caterina must have realized her misconstruction after a few days... for she was really interested in Brazil and its music. Caterina kept her eyes and ears open to new songs and rhythms and soon would be one of the most ardent champions of Brazilian music in Europe having recorded Luiz Antonio's 'Recado' and some of Antonio Carlos Jobim's best songs as 'One note samba'.

  Catarina Valente viu bossa nova e gostou: vai gravar na Europa! Já se revelando fã de João Gilberto, Maysa e Antonio Carlos Jobim, Caterina Valente disse que vai levar p'ra Europa um álbum completo de musicas 'bossa nova' para gravar. Pretende voltar outras vezes ao Brasil.
  
  Revelando ser apreciadora da música brasileira, especialmente do gênero bossa nova, Caterina Valente 'a  mulher mais musical do mundo', estêve, ontem à tarde (19 April 1961), no Copacabana Palace, contando as peripécias de sua longa vida de artista, que se inciou aos 5 anos de idade, quando acompanhava seus pais em tournées artísticas pela Europa.
  
  Apparently, Caterina did not sing in Rio de Janeiro in her first Brazilian tour. After singing at Sao Paulo's Teatro Record for a whole week, Caterina flew to Rio to spend a few days there and talked to journalists at Copacabana Palace on the afternoon of 19 April 1961.
  
  12 May 1961 - published at column 'Nós, os ouvintes' at Rio de Janeiro's 'O Globo': A presença canora de Caterina Valente foi a face mais positiva da 'Noite de Gala', que a TV Rio apresentou na 2a. feira passada - 8 May 1961 - cantando em alemão, francês, inglês, espanhol e até em português potável, a 'Maracangalha' de Dorival Caymmi, destacando-se, principalmente, na interpretação de 'Les amours de decembre', uma linda canção de Gilbert Becaud.
  
  Sylvia Telles, Aracy de Almeida, Sylvio Caldas, Lucio Alves e o Conjunto Farroupilha completaram o bom elenco cantante do espetáculo.
  
  Note from Gabriel Gonzaga: Caterina's US drummer Jimmy Pratt recorded an album with Brazilian guitarrist Baden Powell in 1961 at the Philips studio in Rio de Janeiro. It was produced by Aloysio de Oliveira and released only 2 years later in 1963 through independent label Elenco.
  
  CATERINA VALENTE returns to Sao Paulo 
  20 & 21st June 1968 
  
  When Caterina Valente returned to Sao Paulo for a 2 night-performances on 20 & 21st June 1968 she found an utterly different country. Brazil had been under a military dictatorship since April 1964. Robert Kennedy had been shot on 6 June, the Vietnam War was raging in Asia and Brazil was in turmoil with people trying to get rid of their dictators but to no avail. There was a lull before the storm... that came full on in December 1968 with more oppression from the right-wing dictatorship.
  
  The television station - TV Record - that signed Caterina was the same that had signed her in 1961. But this time things were different. Channel 7 was the most popular TV on the land and had its theatres utterly booked for the productions of local shows so as you can see in the newspaper ad above, Caterina Valente had to be squeezed in between 2 acts: 'Essa noite se improvisa' a high-ratings live quizz-show about musical knowledge at 8:00 PM on Teatro Record situated at rua da Consolação and pianist Magdalena Tagliaferro's concert at 10:00 PM broadcast from Theatro Municipal. 
  
  Teatro Paramount aka Teatro Record-Centro was a much bigger venue than Teatro Record-Consolação... and Caterina Valente's fans filled it to the rafters.
