Description

CATHY YOUNG "A SPOONFUL OF"...ORIGINAL 1969..STEREO
S/6121...FEMALE PSYCH SINGER FROM CANADA...

Say, Cathy, that sure is one HECK of a psychedelic guitar you got there.  You must be pretty proud of it – aw, what am I saying, of COURSE you are – the cover shot shows more of your axe than YOU.  So I’m guessing either you’re not as photogenic as, say, Michelle Philips or that chick in Shocking Blue, or your guitar is more responsible for A Spoonful of Cathy Young than you are.  Hey, Janis Joplin was certainly no looker either, but she never hid behind a giant microphone on her album covers.  And truthfully, you look pretty good from what I can see of you down here on the floor.  I mean, that’s a nice G-string, baby.

A LOT of people LOVE your album, Cathy.  I know they do, they gush about it all the time.  I guess from the appearance of your guitar and your groovy jacket, I was expecting something a bit more, y’know, “psychedelic,” but I can still dig it.  You’re like Carole King with Janis Joplin’s spunk.  Better hair and skin, though.  And if I’d known you were only EIGHTEEN years old when you gave your Spoonful to the world, I’d have cut you a lot more slack.  Because when I was eighteen, I was still driving a Hyundai and making mixed tapes.  So for an 18-year-old girl to get a semi-major record label deal, work with hot session players like Eric Weissberg and Ronnie Zito, and have a guitar worth more than my car (with a much better paint job too), well, my hat’s off to you, Cathy.  Are you still single?

I only wish the liner notes treated you more seriously, though, one moment throwing out sex-charged innuendos like “you’ll feel the vibrations of her magic arouse all and any emotions you may have,” then following it up with sub-Tiger Beat nonsense like “Cathy loves everyone and anything except sauerkraut.”  They wouldn’t talk about Janis or Carole that way, would they?  “Carole King is a spunky Aquarius from Brooklyn who digs the works of Maurice Sendak, works diligently toward protecting the Northern Rockies, and loves a good pork roll sandwich with lots of mustard.”
