THE WORK WAS SCHEDULED TO BE RELEASED ON AN ALBUM IN 1965 (MOST LIKELY ON ESP LABEL), PROBABLY AS A TRIBUTE TO ERIC DOLPHY, AND SOME RECORD GUIDES LIST IT AS A PART OF CECIL TAYLOR’S DISCOGRAPHY, BUT THE ALBUM WAS NEVER ACTUALLY RELEASED.

Jazz Advance is (…) Cecil Taylor's very first recording session. Although the album states that it is from September, 1956, all previous discographies state December 10, 1955 was the actual recording date. Even at this early stage, the 26-year old pianist was extremely advanced in his playing. One can hear Taylor's roots in Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk but his comping and chord voicings were already far ahead of most of his contemporaries. He takes "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" solo, has four trio numbers with bassist Buell Neidlinger and drummer Dennis Charles and, on Taylor's "Charge 'Em Blues" and "Song," soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy makes the group a quartet. This is utterly fascinating music that hints strongly at what was to come.

(a)            SIDE 1 OF THE RECORD IS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            SIDE 2 OF THE RECORD IS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(c)             The album comes with the original booklet still intact, as well as a bonus booklet (for his unreleased work).

(d)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(f)              Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has a partially split spine (between 2 and 4 inches / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the spine (nothing significant)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on front side, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No ring wear

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-         No wrinkles or creases

-         No stamps

-         No peel-off marks

-         No stains

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels (except for a small sticker on the back panel which advertises the booklet inside.

-         No water damage

-         No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.

-         No warping

-         No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
