CEM KARACA – Apa?lar, Karda?lar, Mo?ollar, Ferdy Kleine. Pharaway Sounds PHS 015 LP. Spanish release. FACTORY SEALED VINYL RECORD ALBUM. His 2nd album, originally issued in 1974. This edition issued in 2013. Cem with backing by the individual artists listed in the title. Same tracks as the CD edition. Remasterd sound and includes an informative liner note insert; comes in heavy 350g board stock gatefold cover. DESCRIPTION:  Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca once led Istanbul’s music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet’s broiling righteousness and also his listeners’ common ground with their elders in Turkey’s history. This is the second album from Karaca, released in 1974. It leads the listener through Karaca’s own musical history, skipping across various collaborations and bands up to his then-current project Dervi?an. Can throbbing Anatolian guitars take on the assassins of the Grey Wolves? Imagine a hairy pied piper with R Kelly’s flair for drama, wailing into a microphone over an electric ba?lama, and you’re ready to enter the bohemian world of Papa Cem. Remastered sound (sounding much better than the original pressing) and includes an insert with detailed liner notes.

For millions of Turks Cem Karaca was a phenomenon who, for nearly four decades, mirrored the transformations of his homeland, displayed resolute unwillingness to accept the hand of authority, and embodied aspirations for peace and social justice. Karaca, who had a voice of extraordinary forcefulness, became a leader of the left, a fugitive from Turkey's military government in the 1980s, and finally an advocate of coexistence between Turkey's secularists and Islamists. Through his music he reached out to the people of Anatolia and bridged the gap between them and the musical life of Istanbul's western-oriented middle classes. Karaca was the son of actors and he began life in Istanbul. He was most at ease when among that city's bohemian circles. His parents sent him to Robert Academy, the city's American high school, in the hope that he would become a diplomat, but after Karaca discovered that his singing impressed girls, he turned to music. His mother encouraged his singing and while Karaca continued to dabble with theatre. In 1967 Karaca and his group, the Apaslar, won a song contest and he went professional. He was soon one of the country's most popular singers. In the west, Karaca would have been a protest singer, but there was no such thing in 1960s Turkey. In the early 70s he played with Mogollar, but when the band moved to France he remained in Turkey to further his musical mission. At a time when youth was polarised between leftists and ultra-nationalists, he soon became identified with the left. One of his best known albums was entitled Poverty Isn't A Destiny (1977). Political and personal disagreements caused Karaca to break up with his group. Over the next decade, in various partnerships, he blended progressive rock with Anatolian musical themes. From these efforts came Safinaz, his finest album, issued in 1978. By the time it appeared, left-right clashes were claiming large numbers of lives and in 1979 Karaca moved to Germany. He became the nearest thing that exiled leftwingers there had for a leader, launching attacks against the Turkish right. In 1980, the Turkish military seized power and ordered him to return to face a tribunal. Karaca refused and - like other exiles - was stripped of his Turkish citizenship and remained in Germany until 1987 when he was granted amnesty. Though his popularity was somewhat diminished upon his return he continued to perform and record up until his death in 2004. Though I don’t understand Turkish, his music if very emotional and dynamic that translates quite well despite the language barrier.

If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers.

RETURN POLICY:

It has been several years since I’ve had a package not make its US destination, so risk is minimal.

INTERNATIONAL Customers:  Please wait at least 3 weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. If security is your concern please have your package registered (see above for fee). I do my best to quickly post packages, but once the package is in the hands of the world’s postal systems it is beyond my control. With first class mail international my only option for investigating the loss of your package is to verify that it left this country to its destination country. Most all delayed/lost packages have disappeared/been delayed after they have reached their destination country. NOTE:  Based on recent buyer feedback, International packages have been moving much slower these days; it is not unusual for a package to take over three weeks for delivery (especially to Italy), though normally packages should arrive in 7 to 15 business days.
