IMPULSE 9203 STEREO, 1971

How we grade records:

NM:  We never rate records this way, someone can find a flaw in the records even sealed....
VG+ :Most of our records fall into this range. Some will be new and unplayed, some will have a few marks, but well taken care of and should play fine.
VG: There are a few marks and scuffs and will have a little noise, but still well enjoyable.
VG- : We will not list these.  Only buy them if you have to have them.

How we grade covers:

NM: We never rate covers this way, you will find a flaw even if we condider perfect.
VG+ This is not mint, there may be a few scuffs, tiny seam splits, mabe a piece of tape, but the cover still looks good considering it's age.
VG: This will be very noticeable larger seam splits, repairs, somewhat worn, but still ok.
VG-: We will not list these.

Sorry I cut and pasted the wrong info for this lp, this is the correct description.

This is a hard to find copy of CHARLIE MINGUS: Pithecanthropus Erectus, this is a first pressing on Atlantic.  This is the Atlantic mono pressing, on the black and silver lable.  Deep groove.  Charles Mingus was a 20th century jazz musician whose reputation as a great bassist is matched by his influence as a great composer of what has been called "orchestral jazz." He was musically trained in public schools and Christian churches in Los Angeles, where he went from trombone to cello to double-bass. Between 1941 and 1953 he played professionally with various bandleaders, including Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton and Red Norvo, helping to shape the West Coast sound of "cool jazz." In New York City he and Max Roach launched Debut Records (1953), and Mingus led the first of several Jazz Workshops (ensembles). During the 1950s he began realizing his ambitions as a composer and used his background in gospel and swing -- and his inclination for the jazz avant-garde -- to craft elaborately structured pieces for larger bands that still left room for improvisation. By the 1970s he was considered a living legend, though one of the "not amply rewarded" category. Extremely gifted, wildly eccentric and ultimately crippled by ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), Mingus ranks up there with Duke Ellington as one of jazz's greatest composers. His best-known records include Pithecanthropus Erectus (1956)
