Like Elvis Presley before him and UNLIKE Roy Orbison or Carl Perkins, Charlie Rich never got a chance to record a full-length 12” album for Sam Phillips’ Sun label. But Sam Phillips attempted to make up for this injustice by recording an LP album of Rich’s rockabilly classics for his other Memphis-based label, Philips International. The album was in stores for probably less than six weeks before it was mysteriously withdrawn, never to see the light of day again. Surviving copies- like this one – are major, major rockabilly rarities.
The last in the royal line of Sun Records superstars, Charlie Rich could hold his own with the likes of Elvis, Jerry Lee, Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash before him. Rich's "Lonely Weekends" ripped through the national charts in 1960 like a buzzsaw in one of Sun's last assaults on the Top Twenty. The Arkansas native, who became known as the Silver Fox, would duke it out with the Beatles and Stones in 1965 with his hip-swinging smash "Mohair Sam," then settle into a fertile country career by 1973 with "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World." But this album captures Charlie Rich at the peak of his ripsnorting early powers, once again fulfilling Sun Records owner Sam Philips' often-stated desire for a white man who sang with the soul and power of a black man.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+(+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)
(b) The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).
(c) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER (this is the original, glossy, laminated, cover)
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)
- Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the bottom seam
- Cover has one corner slightly worn / frayed / bent.
- Cover shows some yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3.
- Cover has some faint, faded, barely visible writing on its back side (the writing was originally on the label which was apparently removed from the record, leaving a faint grayish imprint where ink had penetrated the sticker)
- Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the bottom seam
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No stamps
- No peel-off marks
- No stains
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.
- No warping
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
- No bar codes
- No RIAA stamps or stickers.
