Independent album review: ...  "Apparently throw together quickly...and it mostly sound's like it...but it's got a couple of excellent tracks that keep it in my collection. The rest does have a few scattered ok moments but it's mostly pretty garden variety soul stuff, however it is an ok listen right through side 1.

The best here is "C.C. Rider", a really nice, smoothly funky soul track (...don't be put off by the bizarre beginning...), and "Good Morning Starshine", which defies belief by turning a hopelessly wimpy pop track from the "Hair" musical into an excellent soul/funk creation. Never in a million years would have I expected that you could transform that track into something funky...but they did here.! Maybe if they put the same imaginative effort into the rest of this Lp, this record might be sitting alongside Dusty Springfield's and Aretha Franklin's best stuff in the late 60's killer soul canon.

The original label "Weed" was a Motown offshoot and as I'm writing this, this Lp is the only one listed on that label in the RYM database. Great Logo for the era (..a hand showing the peace sign) and label motto (..."Your Favorite Artists Are On Weed")....From what I've read, I believe it was planned as one of the Motown's new subsidiary labels alongside their other new label "Rare Earth". However, I suspect that the whole "Weed" drug bit might have been a bit much for the more conservative souls at Motown management, and they pulled the label with this Lp as it's only listed release.

Note that, as far as I can see, "Chris Clark"'s actual name is not listed anywhere on my pressing of the actual Lp...not on the cover, not on the label, not on the spine...not anywhere..! "
