Brief Info: The second album by Christie, then more of a ‘rock’ band than number one hit single ‘Yellow River’ issued in 1970 may indicate. In fact this is a somewhat overlooked and under-appreciated album and not seen often as an original. Relatively short-lived, by the mid-70s they had folded. The cover is fragile with the format detailed further down, here with a little wear but still attractive. The record appears little played and offers very clean sound and attractive fine looks. So a nice piece for collectors all-round.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format with the front being single thickness card. Entry of the record is via the centrefold. Printed and made in England by Shorewood with ‘Patents Pending’ text. The CBS Bob Dylan and others promotional inner sleeve is included.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Cover Front: A little gentle spine edge rubbing but little else in that respect. There is a vertical crease near the centre and near the very right edge. With the ink unbroken and with normal full-on viewing, these show little but are seen under angled light. Overall, clean, still quite fresh and attractive with barely any rubbing which is a major plus point.

Cover Back: Again a little edge and corner rubbing, but the main surface has very little. Also this back has very little creasing and mimimal traces of rim rubbing, a little near the top only as a fine arc.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A small, very fine piece of ‘adhesive’ near the bottom left corner, possibly a residue from manufacture?, not sure. Any wear or rubbing mainly light, minimal and little, in fact this centrefold is impressively clean and attractive. The really positive factor being the central storage area and the understrength single thickness spine is fully intact, neat and strong with no wear, splits or tears. Such cover formats are notiously fragile and more often seen damaged which this one has avoided.

Top Edges: A little thickening to the front edge but both still neat and flush with no curl. The folded back has minimal rubbing or wear.

Bottom Edges: The front is neat and crisp. Being the main storage edge, the back fold has a light to moderate, slightly patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front think edge has survived well and still crisp and neat with barely any thickening or burring. The back has a folded edge with little wear, any compression gentle.

Spine and Text: With this style of storage and construction, the spines rarely escape wear. Single thickness and under-strength for the purpose being honest. Most of any wear is on the actual folds, mainly on the bottom one with rubbing. With the surface itself retaining a high percentage of it’s ink, this is also still solid, straight with minimal compression. A gentle tilt to the right is the least that can realistically be expected. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel, that is always good news on such covers. Somewhat against the odds, the text is present and has practically escaped wear, just a hint of clipping near the centre as seen in close-up.

Corners: Some tip rubbing but shape for most remains neat on a challenging format.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile early original 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Still attractive and it should please many collectors but not the perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: or close to. An unlined CBS promotional inner with one side dedicated to Bob Dylan albums, this copyrighted 1970. Clean, still quite fresh with just a little creasing near the corner areas. No edge splits or repairs and nice historic piece in its own right.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, mostly very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a lovely vintage record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fairly scarce original album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and and carefully handled. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. Again, it could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
