RARE 1ST U.S. PRESSING

Of all the early breakthrough rock roll artists, none is more important to the development of the music than Chuck Berry. He is its greatest songwriter, the main shaper of its instrumental voice, one of its greatest guitarists, and one of its greatest performers. Quite simply, without him, there would be no Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, nor a myriad others. There would be no standard "Chuck Berry guitar intro," the instrument's clarion call to get the joint rockin' in any setting. The clippety-clop rhythms of rockabilly would not have been mainstreamed into the now standard 4/4 rock roll beat. There would be no obsessive wordplay by modern-day tunesmiths; in fact, the whole history (and artistic level) of rock roll songwriting would have been much poorer without him. Like Brian Wilson said, he wrote "all of the great songs and came up with all the rock'n'roll beats." Those who do not claim him as a seminal influence or profess a liking for his music and showmanship show their ignorance of rock's development as well as his place as the music's first great creator. Elvis may have fueled rock roll's imagery, but Chuck Berry was its heartbeat and original mindset.

STRONG VG+ CONDITION!

RECORD COMES IN A 'HI-GRADE' MFSL PVC INNER SLEEVE (FOR PROTECTION)

(***PLEASE SEE THE PICTURES OF THE LP AND COVER BELOW***)>NOTE: this is a REAL image of the ACTUAL item you are bidding on. This is NOT an image from a previous auction. What you see is what you get.

CONDITION OF THE RECORD:

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, we grade ALL records under a strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight).

  • WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG+. CAUTION>The vinyl is not MINT or NEAR-MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, a few may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters). We could not feel these marks with our finger tip, which makes us suspect that they are not audible.
  • The record is pressed on a beautiful high quality, thick, inflexible vinyl. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, bright and rich in quality.
  • Much of the original luster is very much intact.
  • The white original 'Chess labels' are extremely clean and wear free. Please see pictures below.

CONDITION OF THE COVER:

THE 'GATEFOLD' COVER IS QUITE NICE (for almost 50 years young!); GRADED VG+- (despite the flaws listed) Please see pictures of this below.

The following flaws or imperfections are found on the cover:

  • Cover (corners) show some tip wear. One with a small tip bend, one with a small beginning split (opening end). On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of 'corner wear' as a 3.
    • Cover shows extremely little ring impression; not significant. On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of 'ring impression wear' as a <1 (front) and as a <1 (back).

    • Cover shows little fraying/splitting along spine (2 inches/5 centimeters)~NOTE> ALL writing /credits readable. Also little splitting wear on the bottom seam (2 1/4 inches/5+ centimeters). On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of 'fraying/splitting' wear~spine/one seam) as a 2+ (not real significant).

    • Cover (being white), shows little circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers while in years of storage. (NOT significant).

    • Cover shows some (little) light yellowing/smudge on white (understandably-so) on both sides of its 'almost 50 year old' cover, apparently from aging.

    • Cover (lower back, right corner) shows light initals or light name of perhaps a previous owner~not significant, please see picture below.

    • NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS FOUND ON THE COVER:

      • NO CUTS/HOLES
      • NO CUT CORNERS
      • NO STAMPS
      • NO STICKERS OR LABELS
