Description

SUPER RARE EDITION OF CHUCK BERRY - ROCKIN' AT THE HOPS CHESS LP 1448 1960
RARE BLUE AND SILVER LABEL
The two classic cuts that bookend this album should be enough to attract the uninitiated. "Bye Bye Johnny" and "Let It Rock" were two of his best; but because they've been so heavily anthologized, those two cuts don't have the pulling power here that they would have had 40-some years back. So get this record for everything else that's on it -- Rockin'at the Hops not only has no filler, but it's chock full of records that show off a bluesy side of Berry's output that was never fully appreciated at the time. His version of Big Maceo's "Worried Life Blues" shows how good a bluesman Berry might've been, "Down the Road a Piece," a song written by Don Raye (of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" fame), is a lost Berry single that could've rated right up there with "Roll Over Beethoven,"  and Walter Brown's "Confessin' the Blues" and "Driftin' Blues" fit into the same category. "Too Pooped to Pop" and "Betty Jean," by contrast are a pair of enjoyably upbeat rock & roll numbers, each featuring uncharacteristic elements, a sax solo on the former, and a male chorus on the latter; in between them is "Mad Lad," an instrumental that presents Berry drifting into what would later be defined as a surf guitar mode (and does anyone want to bet that a young Carl Wilson didn't wear out a copy or two listening to this track?). ALL MUSIC

THE VINYL IS VG+  - UNDER LIGHTS IT SHOWS THIN HAIR LINES AND THIN SCRATCHES BUT NOTHING DEEP ALL ON VERY SHINY HEAVY DEEP GROOVE VINYL

REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE RECORD LOOKS LIKE, THE TRUTH IS IN THE HEARING, AND THIS DISC SOUNDS VERY GOOD INDEED! ON PLAYING THERE IS VERY LITTLE SURFACE NOISE, CLICKS ETC HEARABLE. THE ONLY SMALL SHORT CLICKS ARE FOUND IN BETWEEN TRACKS AND AT NEEDLE DROP.  THE DYNAMICS ARE EXCELLENT. NOT A RE MASTER OR REMIX, THIS IS THE REAL ORIGINAL MONO PRESS. WAY BETTER THAN ANY DIGITAL TRANSFER, THE TRUE SOUND COMES THROUGH WITH FLYING COLORS ON THIS SUPERB DEEP GROOVE DISC. VERY ENJOYABLE AND PLEASE PLAY LOUD!!

THE HEAVY CARD JACKET IS EXCELLENT MINUS WITH NO SPLITS - SHOWS VERY LIGHT NORMAL AGE WEAR MAINLY ON BACK AND THERE IS VERY LIGHT BUMPING TO  CORNERS AND EDGES - NO WRITING ON FRONT, NAME WRITTEN ON BACK - NO LABELS OR DAMAGE - SHOWS SMALL NORMAL RING WEAR

LABELS ARE BRIGHT WITH LITTLE SPINDLE SCRATCHING

THE SPINE IS BEAUTIFUL WITH NO DAMGE

PLEASE SEE PHOTOS

FINALLY ONE LAST WORD RE HAIRLINES, IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND ANY NON SEALED RECORD WITHOUT THEM, MANY HAD THEM FROM NEW. MOSTLY THEY ARE A RESULT OF STORAGE AND USE AND USUALLY HAVE LITTLE IMPACT ON THE SOUND QUALITY. THE SAME GOES FOR BACKGROUND NOISE, UNFORTUNATELY ALL RECORDS WILL HAVE SOME AND THIS VARIES AND REFLECTS THE PRESSING QUALITY.

Most records have production marks where someone touched or moved the vinyl while it was still semi-soft.  These marks look like smudges, but are not scratches or "paper scuffs" and do not usually sound.  Untouched vinyl from newly-opened records have these marks.

 RECOMMENDED!

FULLY GUARANTEED!

IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded.

Records are graded under bright lights or discrete sunlight - In the case of visibly possible harmful scratches, the record will be tested and sound quality noted. Many vintage (1955-70) records will play fine with visible damage due to superior vinyl and better pressings.

How I Grade Condition Of Discs

Mint

This means I have owned it from new or purchased from a distributors warehouse, basically it means absolutely new shape, never been played or out of its dust cover. In the case of LP's, a North American album will have to be factory sealed (anyone can reseal an album!) Take Note: European and Japaneses albums were never shrink wrapped!

Note: Being mint does not guarantee it's free of pops and clicks, many pressings especially from the US were made with very poor vinyl and in a hurry which means often there are imperfections in the pressing. As a former importer, we were often given back brand new albums due to clicks heard in the playback.

Mint Minus - No such thing, it's either mint or not.

Excellent - A disc is super clean, with no visible marks

Excellent Plus, means it's probably mint but can't be proven by me.

Excellent minus, is a disc that is excellent except it may have some markings that do not show up in the playing

VG - A disc that is STILL in good shape, WILL have some scuffs or scratches, not in excellent shape but well worth owning. VG + and ++,a disc that is that much better than VG.

VG minus, just a smidgen below VG
