Description

CLARENCE WILLIAMS’ WASHBOARD FIVE

Walk That Broad

Have You Ever Felt That Way?

Okeh 8629

The performances

New York, September 26 1928. Typical, complementary Clarence sides, each with distictive washboard rhythm and Williams vocals. Both excellent numbers, the uptempo side is Walk That Broad, while Have You Ever Felt That Way? is an attractive medium tempo lover’s lament.

Rarity

Doesn’t crop up as often as someof the Williams Okehs, and usually it is in poor shape.

Condition

EE+.  Clean, bright copy, not much wear, with small marks of careless handling that don’t sound. Few inconsequential very feint, very tight lams.

Condition grading  I use the internationally recognised system, as laid out below. My grading is scrupulous. I guarantee down to V+. Grades thereafter being somewhat open to debate.

  • (E+) plays like new with few signs of aging, no noticeable scratches or other marks. Glossy surface, not dull
  • (E) still very shiny, with no visible signs of groove wear (such as greying) but with possibly a few very minor scuffs and very light (inaudible) scratches
  • (E-) still shiny but without the lustre of a new record. Possible light wear (but no audible distortion), light scratches and scuffs
  • (V+) Surface is not shiny, and there may be greying of the grooves caused by needle wear, as well as scratches and scuffs, but playing is generally free of distortion. Some of the scratches may be deep enough to be audible but they will not allow the stylus to skip or jump
  • (V) Record is worn and has scratches, possible "digs", and greying of the grooves. Generally, the record will distort on playing and the scratches and other damage will be audible
