The 1968 raucous recordings of the Sir Douglas Quintet have stayed fresh, and the tracks on their first album "Honky Blues" will keep fans buzzing for the ages...

    ..........................................................

Plain and simple, this is the best  gritty blues/soul rock out there. Electric Flag may have had more raw talent than the Sir Dougless Quintet, but Sir Dougless was smarter.
At the peek of rock getting a massive tye-dye, this band does not, like the Flag on its 1968 release A Long Time Comin' try to psychedelicize the R&B, when here, Sir Douglas and crew leave it pure so it radiates on its own massive power.  Pure does not mean simple: this music has all kinds of complex moves, and the songs are full of compositional adventure. The singer sounds a little like Jack Bruce, and at times, the band does in fact sound like a less experiemtnal Cream. But, again, on its own terms...

It is hard to believe that this is the first Sir Douglas Quintet album, as it seems like the kind of experimental venture an artist might try after a handful of successful albums have already been released. The electic nature of bandleader Doug Sahm is undisputed, but this has got to be his album with his most experimental leanings, again not something one would expect. The type of themes that Sahm would return to again and again in his songwriting are here, delivered by a grouping that lacks one of the essential sparkplugs in the Sir Douglas Quintet engine, keyboard man Augie Meyers. There is presumed to be compensation in the form of a total of five members, and someone decided to record them with enough reverb to submerge a whale. A total of seven songs that get a loping, jamming treatment that gets the message across. Certainly a promising, original album well above the level of most rock-bands-with-experiments of this era of the sixties...
